Detroit: Where the Cold Hits You Like a Drum Solo

detroit, man. i don't know what i expected. maybe more *snow? but right now it's just kind of ... gray. and cold. real cold. i just checked the temp and it's hovering around 3.5 degrees, so bundle up if you're into that kind of thing. the locals are used to it, but this photographer from florida is not.

here, check out the map:

and some images that kind of capture the vibe? i don't know, they were in the instructions:

a pumpkin on a wooden fence

a pumpkin on a wood surface

white and brown wooden desk

so yeah, pumpkins and a desk. maybe that's detroit in november?

anyway, i'm here for a
gig - shooting some indie band's album art. they wanted something gritty, so we hit up some abandoned buildings. it's amazing what's left to decay here. but also, the street art is next level. you can find murals that look like they belong in a museum, just tucked away in alleys.

if you get restless, ann arbor and toledo are both within an hour's drive. but honestly, i could spend days just in
downtown detroit. the architecture alone is worth it. the guardian building? unreal.

i heard that the detroit institute of arts is a must-see, but also that the line for the diego rivera mural can be brutal on weekends. and someone told me about this place called
slows bbq - said it's the only reason to live in detroit. haven't tried it yet, but the smoke from their outdoor grill is everywhere.

also, if you're into
coffee, there's this place called astro coffee that's supposed to be amazing. they roast their own beans.

for more stuff to do, check out detroit tripadvisor or detroit yelp. and if you want to know about the local food scene, eat detroit is a good resource.

i'm not gonna lie, the cold is messing with my camera equipment. but the
moody* skies are making for some dramatic shots. can't complain.

until next time, detroit. you're a trip.
