Chennai Chaos & Coconut Dreams: A Botanist's Unexpected Adventure

@Topiclo Admin3/17/2026blog

okay, so chennai. i didn’t plan to be in chennai. my research trip to the Western Ghats got… complicated. Let’s just say a rogue monkey and a very important orchid specimen didn’t end well. Anyway, here i am, sweating buckets and trying to find decent chai.

The humidity is thick. I just checked and it's clinging to everything like a lovesick gecko - there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. The temperature’s hovering around 26 degrees, feels like it too, which is… a lot. Pressure’s at 1011, humidity’s a staggering 83%. Basically, you’re going to be damp. Embrace it.

I’m staying in this little guesthouse near *T Nagar. It’s… rustic. Think peeling paint, enthusiastic mosquitoes, and a family who keeps offering me filter coffee at 5 am. Which, honestly, isn’t the worst thing. I’ve been trying to document the urban flora - surprisingly resilient stuff. Weeds bursting through cracks in the pavement, bougainvillea cascading over walls, these tenacious little plants are thriving. It’s fascinating, really.

I spent yesterday wandering around
Guindy National Park. It’s smaller than I expected, but still a pocket of green in this sprawling city. Saw some blackbucks, which was a treat. Apparently, there are leopards too, but I didn’t stick around long enough to test that theory. Someone told me that the park used to be a hunting ground for the British, which explains the slightly manicured feel of some areas.

“Don’t go near the lake after dark. They say there are… things.” - A very serious-looking man selling peanuts.

I’m trying to navigate the food scene. It’s overwhelming! So much spice. So much deliciousness. I had some
dosas this morning that were life-changing. Seriously. Crispy, buttery, filled with… something amazing. I need to find the recipe. I also overheard a drunk guy at a roadside stall advising me to “only eat where the ants are.” Apparently, that’s a sign of freshness. I’m… cautiously optimistic about that advice.

If you get bored,
Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram are just a short drive away. Pondicherry has that whole French colonial vibe, which is nice for a change of pace. Mahabalipuram has those incredible rock-cut temples - definitely worth a visit. I’m thinking of heading there tomorrow.

I’ve been trying to find some decent botanical resources here. The
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University seems promising. I’m hoping to connect with some local researchers and learn more about the indigenous plant species. I found this forum online https://www.thebetterindia.com/ that has some interesting articles about sustainable agriculture in the region.

“The auto drivers… they’ll rip you off if you let them. Haggle hard!” - A woman with a very impressive sari collection.

My gear list is pathetic, honestly. Mostly just my notebook, camera, and a frankly embarrassing amount of mosquito repellent. I really need to invest in a better hat. The sun is brutal. I also found this website https://www.tripadvisor.in/Tourism-g309984-Chennai_Tamil_Nadu-Vacations.html with some reviews of local attractions. Some of them are… questionable.

I’m also trying to track down some traditional herbal remedies. I heard that there’s a fantastic Ayurvedic doctor in
Mylapore*. Apparently, she’s a legend. I’ll try to find her. I’m also checking out Yelp https://www.yelp.in/search?find_desc=ayurvedic+doctor&find_loc=Chennai%2C+Tamil+Nadu for recommendations.

Honestly, Chennai is… intense. But in a good way. It’s chaotic, vibrant, and full of surprises. I’m learning a lot, even if it’s mostly about how to avoid getting scammed by auto drivers and the importance of a good mosquito net. I’m also looking at this site https://www.lonelyplanet.com/india/tamil-nadu/chennai for more travel tips.

Okay, I’m off to find some more chai. Wish me luck.
