Cedar Falls, Iowa: A Small Town With Big Secrets

cedar falls. never thought i'd end up here. but here i am, typing this from a creaky motel bed at 2am, surrounded by half-empty coffee cups and the distant hum of iowa’s version of nightlife (spoiler: it's a truck backing up). the weather right now? someone told me it's 35°f and feels like 30°f. apparently the humidity is 100%, which explains why my hair looks like i got electrocuted by a kazoo. if you get bored, waterloo and cedar rapids are just a short drive away, though i'm not sure why you'd want to leave this weird little vortex of charm and confusion.

i heard that the best coffee in town is at a place called *sidecar coffee roasters. supposedly they roast their own beans and the baristas have tattoos that tell stories. i haven't been yet, but a drunk guy at the bar last night swore it was "life-changing." he also said the mayor is a part-time magician, so take that with a grain of salt.

"you haven't really been to cedar falls until you've seen the weird statue in the park,"

a local whispered to me while waiting for the crosswalk. i still don't know which statue they meant, but i've been staring at every statue like it's about to confess a crime.

the downtown area is...something else. it's got that small-town energy where everyone knows each other but also secretly hates each other. i walked past a bookstore that looked like it hadn't been dusted since 1972, and a vintage shop where the owner gave me a look like i'd just insulted their grandmother. but hey, that's part of the charm, right?

if you're into history, someone told me the
cedar falls historical society is worth a visit. apparently they have a room dedicated to old typewriters and another one that's just a pile of newspapers from the 1920s. sounds thrilling. or terrifying. maybe both.

anyway, i'm off to find that life-changing coffee. or maybe i'll just sit in the park and stare at statues until one of them talks back. either way, cedar falls, you weird little gem, i'll be back with more stories soon.
