bogotá’s monóton heat didn’t bother me – skateboarding through the viejo’s cobblestones anyway

bogotá’s monóton heat didn’t bother me - skateboarding through the viejo’s cobblestones anyway. the air sticky as underoath at a death metal show - 22°C sticky, if you care - but the cobblestones? bless you, chair legs from a forgotten empires. i’m here on a stolen hour of sunlight, wheels humming like a chainsaw in slow motion. found a sketchbook loose on a café counter earlier, pages doodled with half-finished cafes and giant, brooding eagles. probably someone’s diary. I’m a sucker for unfinished things.

*rider’s checklist:
- wheels: cupped from heat-warped asphalt
- grip tape: smudged with dirt from last ditch effort
- helmet: borrowed, smells like burnt almonds and regret

secret tip: don’t trust the volcano. the ‘gatua sled’ locals whisper about? not a ride - it’s a straitjacket. I tried. got stuck mid-air, cobblestones mocking me like judges at a drag race.

stood outside the parque de las lores for 20 minutes watching a kid in neon shorts do fakies on a BMX wheel. he didn’t care the sun was melting his face. reminds me of my uncle when he tried to explain quantum physics to a goldfish. this kid’s got potential. probably skatebanned at school.

someone told me that the library downtown serves as a ghost hostel. not sure if they’re joking. checked the roof - saw a guy in a hat arguing with a pigeon. classic employee. locals call this place ‘la biblioteca fantasma’ now. Yelp says it’s ‘charming’ - same word they used to describe my ex who ghosted me before I could buy her a drink.

pro move*: buy a local SIM card. data cost me a stare-down with a vendor who might’ve been a spy. or hungry. either way, I needed to check that absurd hotel review about the room smelling like ‘wet dog and bad decisions’ - turns out it’s true. located the dump with TripAdvisor maps. didn’t bother booking.

i just checked and it’s... there right now. the humid idiot sweat-cookie weather. feels like breathing through a wool sock. made friends at a rooftop kinda-bar with the man who’d’ve been my tax debt if I got arrested. he wears socks with sandals. called it a ‘style statement.’ I need to learn from this man’s self-confidence.

if you want drama, ask the guy on the peephole. he’s always filming his neighbors’ balconies. his phone’s older than me. I threw him a bag of popcorn - he didn’t flinch. creepiest customer yet. THE REALITY STARS DON’T CHEER HERE.

filtered a coffee through a masked barista who wouldn’t stop raving about brewed basil. overpaid 2.0, but I needed a refill before the street vendor bag of popcorn got too bright. the city breathes through its windows - steam at the panaderas, exhaust from buses that smell like a greasy quince. street cats rule anyhow.

if you get bored, Cartagena’s just a stone’s throw. but driving there? I required a mime to guide me past a corrupt cop who tried to shake me down with a drumstick typography. New York of Colombia? More like a halfway zone with delusions.

ended the day at the Coverage Club. Listened to synthwave noise core while eating helado in paper cups. my knees killed me, but the beat felt like rebellion. Colombia’s not a vacation spot - it’s a Caution sign with expensive ice cream. tag me later when you accidentally fall in love with a city that remembers your old mistakes.

P.S. the best photography spots here? Get lost. Follow the guy in the bucket hat who thinks he’s Vincent Wolf. his Unsplash feed’s just a shadow of his self.
