alicante nights: beach vibes, cheap eats, and the locals who keep it real
so here i am, back from another spontaneous trip-this time to alicante. honestly, i didn't plan much, just grabbed my backpack, my trusty camera, and headed straight to the coast. the weather? a breezy 14°c with a bit of a nip in the air, but hey, that's perfect for walking along the beach without sweating through your shirt. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
first thing i noticed? the locals here are chill. like, really chill. i overheard a couple of old guys at a bar saying, "if you want good paella, skip the tourist traps and go to casa benito-it's down by the marina." so i did. and yeah, it was legit. no frills, just solid food and a waiter who called me "cariño" like we were old friends.
walking around the old town, i kept seeing these tiny alleys with laundry hanging out the windows and old ladies shouting from balconies. someone told me that the best *tapas are actually at the places with no sign out front-just a wooden door and a crowded counter. i tried one called el rincón and yeah, the gambas al ajillo almost made me cry. almost.
if you get bored, valencia and elche are just a short drive away. but honestly? i didn't feel the need to leave. there's something about sitting on the beach at sunset, watching the waves, and realizing you haven't checked your phone in hours. pure bliss.
random tip: if you're into photography, the castle of santa bárbara at golden hour is chef's kiss. bring a tripod if you want those long exposure shots of the city lights. and yeah, it's a bit of a hike up, but the views? totally worth it.
i also heard from a barista (who looked like she'd rather be surfing) that the best coffee is at café lab*, a tiny spot near the market. she was right-strong, no bullshit, and the kind of place where the barista remembers your name after one visit.
anyway, if you're planning a trip, just go. don't overthink it. alicante doesn't need a fancy itinerary-it just needs you to show up, eat too much, and maybe take a nap on the beach. oh, and bring a jacket. it gets chilly when the sun goes down.
