Aachen: Medieval Castles, Cold January, and Why I’m Still Here (Spoiler: The Beer)

@Chloe Weaver3/2/2026blog

okay so i checked the weather this morning and it's a chilly 16.2c out there, though feels like 15.29 with that bureaucratic wind. hope you like walking around in layers like a human burrito. my flatmates call this “aachen weather whiplash”-yesterday it rained on my socks, today it’s basically a sauna. not sure if it’s climate change or just the city trying to outdo itself at being unpredictable.

today i dragged myself to kurzschnersplatz just because the sun was up. i know, i know, but the park was empty except for some old guy jogging wearing neon socks. maybe he was fleeing from the germany vs. austria debate happening in the bakery next door. heard some girl there say something about the printen spices being “mild this year”-i didn’t ask about that. didn’t need the disappointment.

if you get bored, dortmund’s night markets are a 40-minute detour. trust me, the bratwurst there’s better than the stuff in trier. which is saying something, because trier’s bratwurst is like a museum exhibit-everyone admires it but nobody eats it.

someone told me that the ratingen airport has a vending machine that sells hot dogs shaped like eiffel towers. i don’t know if that’s true or just a rumor cooked up by a local to prank unsuspecting exchange students. either way, i’m filing it under “things to investigate with stolen prom codes.”

side note: the castle might have better views, but the fries at the café on top? undercooked. stick to the bratwurst vendors near gate 10. they’re safer batches of magic.
