Warangal: A Wild Ride Through Telangana's Forgotten Fortress
woke up this morning with no plan, just a backpack and a burning need to get out of hyderabad. so i hopped on a bus to warangal. yeah, warangal. ever heard of it? probably not. but let me tell you-it's a hidden gem if you're into crumbling forts, ancient temples, and chaos with a side of history.
first off, the weather was brutal. i just checked and it's 37.02°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. bring water. like, a lot of it. i made the mistake of thinking i could survive on chai alone. rookie move.
when i got there, i was greeted by the thousand-pillar temple, or at least what's left of it. the architecture is insane-carvings so detailed you'd think they were done yesterday. but the best part? there was a local guy there, mid-50s, sitting under a tree, who told me the place was haunted by a dancing queen from the 12th century. i laughed, but he was dead serious. "she still visits on full moons," he said. i didn't stick around to check.
next, i wandered over to the warangal fort. it's massive, crumbling, and covered in these weird rock formations that look like they're melting. i overheard a group of college kids saying the fort is cursed. "my cousin went there at night and saw shadows moving," one of them whispered. take that as you will.
if you get bored, hyderabad and karimnagar are just a short drive away. but honestly, warangal doesn't need a backup plan. it's got enough going on.
food-wise, i hit up a dhaba near the fort. the biryani was fire, and the owner kept calling me "boss" even though i'm pretty sure he had no idea what i was saying. classic.
for anyone thinking of going, here's the deal: go early, wear sunscreen, and don't trust everything you hear. but also, trust some of it-because that's where the magic is.
