wandering through the white-washed dream of Ostuni

the first thing that hits you about Ostuni isn't the view-it's the light. that weird, almost glowing white stone everywhere. i rolled in on a bus that smelled like old cheese and damp socks, and somehow that felt perfect. the air was thick with something between sea salt and ancient dust, and my phone said it was 9.96°C with 87% humidity, so basically sweater weather with a side of damp socks for your soul. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

walking through the old town felt like stepping into a movie set where they forgot to tell you it's not real. every alley curved into another, and every corner had a cat judging you. i overheard a local muttering about how the best gelato is at *Gelateria del Corso -apparently it's been family-run since the 70s and they still use nonna's recipe. someone told me that the pistachio is life-changing, but also that the guy working there gives you extra if you smile at him. not sure if that's gossip or just drunk advice.

if you get bored,
Alberobello and Lecce are just a short drive away, and honestly, i heard they're both worth the trip if you're into either weird cone-shaped houses or baroque architecture that looks like it's melting. i didn't make it to either, but i did find a tiny courtyard where an old man was playing an accordion and selling homemade limoncello. no sign, no menu, just a weathered table and a smile. i bought a glass, and he told me stories about how the town used to be a hideout for artists and rebels. whether that's true or just local color, i have no idea, but i loved it.

food-wise, i ended up at
Osteria del tempo perso* after a bartender said it was "the only place that matters." it's tucked away so deep you'd miss it if you blinked, but the orecchiette with turnip greens was absurdly good. someone else said the same place does a secret off-menu wine that's not on the list-if you ask nicely, they might share. or they might not. that's half the fun.

for a place that looks so perfect, Ostuni feels surprisingly unpolished. it's not trying to be charming-it just is. the streets are uneven, the signs are faded, and the locals seem mildly amused by tourists. it's like they've seen us all before and know we'll leave eventually, which makes it feel more real than other towns that try too hard.

if you're into slow travel, weird history, and food that makes you want to move here permanently, Ostuni is calling. just don't expect it to chase you-it's too cool for that.
