Varadero Diaries: Sun, Sand, and Some Serious Humidity

so here i am in varadero, cuba, sweating through another day of tropical chaos. the numbers 3566054 and 1192894106? no clue what they mean, but they’re stuck in my head like a bad reggaeton hook. anyway, the weather’s doing its thing-temp’s 27.01°c, feels like 27.43°c, and the humidity is sitting at 50%. basically, it’s the kind of heat that makes you question every life choice that led you here. but hey, it’s cuba-you don’t come for the climate, you come for the vibe.

i just checked and it’s 27.01°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. if you’re planning to visit, pack light, breathable clothes-and maybe a portable fan. seriously.

varadero’s beaches are legendary, but let’s be real-they’re packed. i overheard someone at a beach bar say, “the best sand is where the tourists aren’t.” i didn’t believe it until i found a quieter stretch near the marina. worth the walk, trust me.

if you get bored, matanzas and cienfuegos are just a short drive away. locals say matanzas has some hidden caves that are worth the trip, but i haven’t checked them out yet. maybe next time.

food here is a mixed bag. i heard from a drunk guy at a paladar that the best mojitos are at this hole-in-the-wall place near the golf course. i tried it-he wasn’t wrong. but the ropa vieja? hit or miss. one night it was amazing, the next it was like chewing on a tire.

“the best mojitos are at this hole-in-the-wall place near the golf course.”

for accommodations, i stayed at a casa particular that a friend recommended. it was cozy, but the air conditioning was a joke. i spent half the night fanning myself with a magazine. if you’re booking, maybe check *TripAdvisor for reviews-just don’t trust everything you read.

Varadero Beach is a must-see, but go early to avoid the crowds. Josone Park is another spot locals love-it’s peaceful and perfect for a lazy afternoon. and if you’re into snorkeling, Marina Chapelín has some decent spots, though i heard the coral isn’t what it used to be.

overall, varadero’s a mixed bag. it’s beautiful, chaotic, and a little overwhelming. but that’s cuba for you. just roll with it, and you’ll have a story to tell.
