this foggy little town that caught me off guard
so i rolled into this place with nothing but a backpack and a half-charged phone, expecting maybe some cute main street vibes and a decent coffee shop. what i got instead was a weird little pocket of the world where the air felt like a damp hug and the buildings looked like they'd been painted by someone half-asleep. the numbers 5756758 and 1840021206? yeah, i still have no idea what those mean. maybe coordinates. maybe a glitch in my head from too much caffeine. who knows.
anyway, the weather was doing this thing where it couldn't decide if it wanted to rain or just hover in a misty standoff. i checked the temp and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity was high enough to make my hair look like i'd just survived a small tornado, and the wind was whispering things i couldn't quite catch.
i stayed in this creaky old guesthouse run by a woman who smelled like lavender and regret. she told me, "don't trust the clock tower. it's slow on purpose." i didn't know what that meant, but i nodded like it was profound. the next morning, i found out the clock tower was indeed 12 minutes behind, and somehow that felt like the most honest thing in town.
if you get bored, portland and seattle are just a short drive away, but honestly? i'd rather wander the foggy alleys here and pretend i'm in a low-budget indie film. there's something about the way the streetlights flicker here that makes you feel like you're being watched by ghosts with good taste.
i heard from a barista (who may or may not have been a spy) that the best pie in town is at a place called "grandma's secret," but when i got there, it was just a guy in a tracksuit selling frozen slices out of a cooler. still delicious though. sometimes the rumors are better than the reality, but in this case, both were solid.
would i come back? absolutely. but next time i'm bringing a better jacket and fewer expectations. this town doesn't hand out answers, but it does serve a mean cup of confusion with a side of fog.
p.s. if you're into weird small towns with questionable clocks and even weirder pies, check out portland's quirky side or seattle's underground tours. just don't tell them i sent you.
