Spray Paint, Shivers, and Baffling Numbers: My Berlin Winter Obsession
okay, so berlin in the dead of winter? don't get me started. i've been here for three months now, living out of a backpack and my spray can collection, and the weather is just ridiculous. i just checked my app and it's 5.49 degrees celsius out there, but feels like 4.17 - whatever that means, it's cold enough to freeze my paint off. humidity's at 68%, pressure 1020, sea level 1020, ground level 1014 - i have no idea what any of that shit means, but my fingers are numb and that's all that matters. perfect conditions for indoor cafes, but i'm a street artist, so i'm out here in the drizzle, trying not to get caught by the polizei.
i've been obsessed with these numbers i saw tagged on a wall near kottbusser tor: 2925535 and then below it, 1276397323. no context, just like a secret code or something. i looked it up on my phone, and it seems like coordinates? but when i plug them into google maps, it points to the middle of the ocean east of korea or something. so either some artist has a thing for asian geography, or it's just random bullshit. either way, it's been stuck in my head. here, let me show you where i am most of the time:
that's berlin, obviously. but those coordinates? they're nowhere near here. i heard from a local graffiti legend that there's a spot in friedrichshain where you can see the whole city skyline, but beware, the security patrols are fucking brutal. someone told me that last week, a friend got arrested for tagging there - drunk advice from a bar in kreuzberg, so take it with a grain of salt. but i'm tempted, you know? the vibe here is electric, even in this grey weather.
speaking of weather, it's been drizzling on and off, and the temperature is hovering around 5 degrees. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. seriously, if you come to berlin in winter, pack a fucking coat. and gloves. and a scarf. and maybe a thermos of hot something. i've been surviving on stolen espresso from cafes around neukölln - there's this one place on yelp that has the best flat white, link here: Yelp. oh, and if you need art supplies, there's a hidden shop in mitte that's cheap, but you have to ask around. i'll link a tripadvisor forum where they gossip about it: TripAdvisor.
the neighbors? if you get bored, potsdam's just a quick train ride away, with its palaces and quieter streets. perfect for a day trip when you need to escape the urban chaos. but honestly, why would you leave? berlin has everything: abandoned buildings to paint, underground clubs, and food that'll make you cry happy tears. i had the best döner last night at a stand in alexplatz - no joke, it's legendary. check it out on some local board: Local Board.
now, about those reviews - i overheard some tourists in a pub saying that the east side gallery is overrated, full of instagrammers and no real art. but then a local told me that the best pieces are in the back alleys, where you have to know the right people. i love that shit. it's like the city is a puzzle, and you're constantly discovering new layers.
let me show you some of the scenes i've been capturing:
those are from unsplash, but they capture the mood. i've been working on a series about isolation and connection, using the city as my canvas. the cold weather actually helps - less people on the streets, more time to paint without interruptions. but man, my hands are killing me.
i should mention the pressure: 1020 hpa, which is high, meaning clear skies? but it's been cloudy. whatever. the humidity 68% makes everything feel damp, and my paint takes forever to dry. but that's the life, right? you adapt.
oh, and those ground level and sea level numbers? sea level 1020, ground level 1014 - i think that's for altitude or something. berlin is pretty flat, so not much difference. but i digress.
what was i saying? right, the coordinates. i decided to look up 29.25535,127.6397323 on a deeper level. it turns out, it's near okinawa, japan. which is warm as hell, nothing like berlin. so maybe it's a reference to a warmer place, or a memory, or just random. i have a friend who lives in tokyo, and he said that area is near some islands. but why would it be tagged here? maybe it's a clue for a treasure hunt, or just some kid messing around. i love the mystery of it all.
in other news, i heard that the techno scene in berlin is still popping despite the cold. if you're into that, check out berghain - but good luck getting in. i'm more of a street art person, so i'll stick to my walls.
anyway, i need to go back out there before the light fades. the sun sets early, around 4 pm, and then it's just dark and cold. perfect for painting under the bridges. if you're in berlin, hit me up on instagram - i'm always around. and if you see those numbers, let me know what you think.
peace out, and stay warm.
