Skopje in the Off-Season: Cold Air, Warm Hearts, and a Few Weird Sculptures

so here i am in skopje, macedonia, typing this with cold fingers because the weather decided to be a jerk. it's 11 degrees out there-feels like 9.63 if you're into decimals-and the humidity is so low my skin is basically a raisin. but hey, at least the pressure's high at 1024, so maybe that's why i'm feeling weirdly motivated to explore.

walking around the city center feels like stepping into a weird dream. there's statues everywhere-like, way too many. i heard from a barista (who looked like she'd rather be anywhere else) that the government went a bit overboard with the "neoclassical facelift" a few years back. someone told me that locals either love it or pretend it doesn't exist. no in-between.

i stopped by a tiny bakery near the stone bridge because the smell of fresh burek was calling my name. the guy behind the counter didn't speak much english, but he mimed eating and pointed at the spinach one. best decision of the day. if you're ever here, check out *skopje old bazaar on yelp-it's a maze of cobblestone streets and shops selling everything from socks to handmade jewelry.

later, i wandered up to the fortress. the climb is steep, but the view? worth it. you can see the whole city sprawled out like a messy puzzle. someone i met at a hostel (yes, i'm staying in a hostel, don't judge) said the best time to go is sunset, but i was there at noon and it was still epic.

if you get bored,
belgrade and sofia are just a short drive away. i haven't been yet, but i've heard belgrade's nightlife is insane and sofia's got some killer free walking tours.

i just checked and it's still cold out there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. but honestly, the chill in the air makes the hot coffee taste better, and the locals are so friendly it warms you up anyway.

random tip: if you're into offbeat museums, the
skopje city museum* is small but weirdly fascinating. i overheard someone say it's like stepping into a time capsule of yugoslavia. not sure if that's a compliment, but i'm here for it.

anyway, skopje isn't perfect, but it's got character. and right now, that's exactly what i need.
