Shkodër Diaries: Where the Mist Hangs Like a Bad Decision

woke up to the kind of grey that makes you question every life choice. the weather app said 8.85°C and 81% humidity, which in human terms means: bring a scarf and a grudge. i just checked and it's still there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

anyway, i'm in shkodër, albania, and the first thing i noticed was how the mountains look like they're judging you. hard. the old town is a maze of cobblestones that hate your ankles, and every corner smells like someone's grandma is roasting peppers in a wood-fired oven. someone told me that the rosa bar is where all the poets go to cry into their raki, so naturally i had to check it out.

"if you want to feel something, go to the ebu bekër mosque at dawn. it's quieter than your regrets."

i heard that from a guy who looked like he'd been awake for three days and was surviving on black coffee and spite. he was right, though. the mosque is beautiful in a way that makes you want to whisper, even if you're not religious.

if you get bored, tirana and podgorica are just a short drive away, but honestly, shkodër's got enough chaos to keep you entertained. the rozafa castle is worth the climb, even if your legs hate you afterward. i overheard someone say the view is "like staring into the soul of a country that refuses to be defined," which is either poetic or pretentious, depending on how much raki you've had.

for food, *restaurant tradita geg & tos is where you go to eat like you're in someone's living room. the kafja e vjetër is perfect for coffee and people-watching, especially if you like watching people who look like they've seen things.

i also stumbled into a tiny bookstore called
libra tetovë that smelled like old paper and rebellion. the owner, a woman with hair like a storm cloud, recommended a book by iskander kemal that i'm still trying to track down.

if you're into street art, shkodër's got murals that feel like they're screaming at you. someone said they're political, but i think they're just tired of being ignored.

anyway, that's shkodër. it's messy, it's moody, and it's exactly the kind of place that makes you want to write something or burn it all down. maybe both.

check out
tripadvisor for more on rozafa castle, yelp for restaurant tradita geg & tos, and lonely planet* for the full vibe. and if you're into chaos, you'll fit right in.
