Seoul Searching: A Whirlwind in the City of Spicy Noodles

@Oscar Finch3/4/2026blog

okay, so i’m still processing. *Seoul. just… wow. i landed here yesterday, and it’s been a non-stop sensory overload. the air? thick. not in a bad way, more like… a perfume of exhaust fumes and street food. i just checked and it's… humid, real humid, there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

i was trying to decipher those numbers - 7910925 and 1360827216 - clinging to them like lifelines. i figured they were some kind of… code? maybe a secret message from the city itself? honestly, at this point, i'm open to anything. it felt like a notification of sorts to embrace the chaos.

first impressions? forget everything you think you know. the neighborhoods are wildly different. one minute you're in a super trendy area with cafes that look like they’re straight out of a magazine. the next, you're wandering through a maze of tiny alleyways filled with
ssam shops and folks playing traditional music. it’s beautiful. and confusing. in the best way.

i’m staying in
Myeongdong, which is… intense. think Times Square on steroids, but with way more skincare products.

.

i had this whole itinerary planned,
very planned. museums, temples, specific restaurants… you know the deal. but it went out the window about five minutes after i stepped off the plane. i just started wandering. sometimes the best travel moments are the unplanned ones.

Food is a whole other level here. i’ve eaten things i can’t even pronounce (and probably can’t spell). bibimbap, kimchi jjigae, tteokbokki… my taste buds are in a constant state of happy shock. someone told me that the best street food is always found down the smallest side streets, so that’s where i’m headed next. i'm definitely putting together a list of places to try on Yelp.

the weather? it's a little… clingy. very humid, and the sun peeks out intermittently. it's definitely that kind of heat that makes you sweat just
thinking about going outside. but it's a warm, welcoming kind of humidity, if that makes sense. if you get bored, Busan is just a short train ride away, apparently. someone mentioned the beaches are incredible, although i haven’t had time to check them out yet.

i heard that the
Insadong area is a bit touristy, but it's worth a stroll. i'm trying to soak it all in, to just absorb the energy of the city. i saw a street artist working near Gyeongbokgung Palace today; it was captivating.

.

i'm not even sure what to
say* about this place. it’s vibrant, it's chaotic, it's beautiful, it's exhausting… it's everything. it's definitely a place that gets under your skin.

i'm figuring out how to access the local transport app now - apparently, it’s essential. i might have to check out this article on TripAdvisor for getting around if i get hopelessly lost. i'm also considering a cooking class - i've seen some amazing restaurants and I want to learn how to recreate some of these dishes at home. check out this blog for some Korean recipes!

Anyway, gotta go. I’m off to find some street food. Wish me luck.

and yeah, those numbers… still not sure what they mean. maybe i’ll ask a local? or maybe i'll just embrace the mystery. #Seoul #SouthKorea #Travel #CityLife #Adventure #KoreanFood
