Sendai's Rainy Day Charm: Where Concrete Meets Cherry Blossoms

the weather's doing that weird thing again-cold enough to make your nose run but not cold enough for a proper coat. i just checked and it's 3.61°C there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. Sendai's not exactly screaming "instagram paradise" from the rooftops, but that's exactly why i kinda love it.

walked around the city center for hours, watching salarymen sprint through puddles like they're late for a meeting with the emperor himself. the concrete jungle vibe here is real-all sharp angles and neon signs flickering in the mist. but then you turn a corner and boom: a tiny shrine with lanterns that look like they've been there since samurai times.

overheard some drunk salaryman at a standing bar saying, "Sendai's best kept secret? The grilled beef tongue. Don't ask why, just eat it." so i did. at 宫ata鳥胞店 (link to local spot), and yeah, he wasn't wrong. chewy, savory, weirdly addictive. someone told me that locals eat it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. might be an exaggeration, but i'm not ruling it out.

if you get bored, [cities] are just a short drive away-like Fukushima with its haunting beauty or Yamagata if you're into mountains that disappear into clouds. but Sendai's got this gritty charm that makes you want to stay. maybe it's the coffee shops that double as bookstores, or the way the river reflects all those office lights at night.

pro tip: don't trust Google Maps here. it'll send you down alleys that feel like they belong in a horror movie. but that's where the good stuff is-tiny izakayas with no English menus, vending machines selling hot soup (yes, really), and old ladies who'll feed you mochi and ask if you're married yet.

would i come back? absolutely. would i recommend it to someone who wants beaches and mai tais? probably not. but if you're into cities that feel alive in a slightly off-kilter way, Sendai's your jam. just bring layers. and maybe a sense of adventure.
