Sapporo Diaries: A Drumstick in the Snow

drumsticks in the snow, who would've thought? sapporo’s been a wild ride. i landed here with just my sticks and a half-broken cymbal bag, thinking maybe i could catch a gig at some dive bar. turns out, the city’s got a heartbeat of its own, and it’s not always in 4/4 time.

just checked the weather and it’s 3.79°c with a humidity that feels like you’re breathing through a wet towel. hope you like that kind of thing. the locals? they’re bundled up like it’s the apocalypse, but they’re still out there, sipping ramen broth like it’s their lifeblood.

i heard from a bartender that the best gigs are in the back alleys near susukino. he said, “if you can find the red lantern, you’ll find the music.” sounded like drunk advice, but i’m taking it. someone told me that the snow here muffles everything, so you gotta play louder. like the city’s asking you to prove you’re worth listening to.

if you get bored, hakodate and otaru are just a short drive away. but honestly, i’m not sure why you’d leave. sapporo’s got this weird mix of chaos and calm. one minute you’re dodging taxis, the next you’re standing in front of a shrine that feels like it’s been there since the dawn of time.

i tried to find a practice space, but all i got was a shrug and a “maybe try the community center.” classic. but hey, that’s the charm of this place. it’s not polished, it’s not perfect, but it’s real. and that’s why i’m here, sticks in hand, ready to make some noise.

check out the sapporo tourism board for more tips, or just wander until you find your own red lantern. either way, you’ll end up somewhere worth the trip.
