San Marcos La Laguna: Where the Lake Meets the Sky (and Maybe Your Soul)

okay, so i landed in san marcos la laguna after a bumpy shuttle ride from antigua, and immediately felt like i'd stepped into some kind of hippie fever dream. the air smelled like woodsmoke and cacao, and every third person was wearing a crystal or offering a cacao ceremony. not gonna lie, i was skeptical at first, but then i saw the lake at sunset and thought, okay, maybe there's something to this place.

*the vibe here is...intense. people come for the yoga retreats, the meditation circles, the sound baths-you name it. i overheard someone in a cafe saying they'd been here for six months and forgot what day it was. another local warned me that the full moon parties can get "weird," which i took to mean either magical or mildly unhinged.

anyway, the weather was doing its own thing-humid, warm, with that sticky lake breeze that clings to your skin. i just checked and it's 19.48°C there right now, feels like 19.6°C, so basically perfect for sweating through your organic cotton shirt while debating whether to join a breathwork session.

food options are surprisingly legit. there's this tiny spot called Cafe Sabor Cruceno that does vegan tamales so good you'll question your life choices. another rumor floating around was about a secret kombucha bar run out of someone's living room-haven't found it yet, but i'm on the hunt.

if you get bored, panajachel and santa cruz la laguna are just a short boat ride away. but honestly, san marcos might suck you in. the lake is this deep teal color that doesn't look real, and the volcanoes in the background make every photo look like a screensaver.

getting here is half the adventure.* the road in is narrow, winding, and occasionally blocked by cows. bring cash-ATMs are a myth, and card readers are powered by good vibes and unreliable solar panels.

i met a woman who said she came for a week and stayed three years. another guy told me the night sky here is "like God spilled glitter on a black velvet blanket." take that as you will.
