San Francisco Static: Rain, Ramen, and Really Weird Vibes
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on caffeine and regret. 5394136 and 1840021634 - don’t ask. it’s a thing. the air here is…thick. like, you can almost taste the fog and the desperation of trying to find a parking spot. the temp is hovering around 11.62 feels like 11.19, min 10.82, max 12.61. pressure’s a solid 1020, humidity’s clinging to everything like a damp wool sweater, sea level is 1020, ground level is 1005 - which, honestly, doesn’t tell you much. it just feels…heavy.
I spent the last three days just wandering, mostly because my phone died and i didn’t want to admit defeat. the mission district is a total sensory overload - smells of garlic and something vaguely illegal, music blasting from every doorway, people shouting in a dozen different languages. i stumbled into this tiny ramen shop, ‘Lucky Dragon,’ and it was…intense. like, the chef was yelling at someone in japanese and the broth was so rich it felt like it was coating my soul. i overheard someone say it’s the best ramen in the city, but also that the owner thinks he’s a reincarnated samurai. you know, standard San Francisco.
I’m trying to document everything, but my camera’s acting up and my brain is actively trying to escape. i need to find a decent coffee place. seriously. the stuff here is…an experience. it’s like they’re deliberately trying to make you question your life choices. i’m thinking a double espresso, black, no sugar. maybe a shot of something stronger.
Speaking of experiences, i checked the Yelp reviews for the *Golden Gate Bridge and someone told me that it’s best to go at sunrise, but only if you’re prepared to fight a hundred other tourists for the perfect Instagram shot. i heard that…it’s worth it? debatable. i’m leaning towards just staring at it from a distance, preferably while nursing a beer.
I spent an afternoon exploring North Beach, which is basically the oldest Italian neighborhood in the country. it’s charming, in a crumbling, slightly depressing way. there’s this bookstore called City Lights, which is legendary. i bought a beat-up copy of On the Road - felt appropriate. i also found a tiny bar called Vesuvio Cafe, where they still serve the same drinks Hemingway used to drink. it’s…atmospheric.
Seriously, if you get bored, Sacramento is just a short drive away. or Berkeley. or, you know, anywhere else. i’m starting to think i’m just wandering in circles.
I’m staying in a hostel in the Mission, which is…an experience. let’s just say the walls are thin and the snoring is epic. i’m sharing a room with a guy who collects vintage postcards and a woman who claims to be a psychic. it’s a vibe. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
I need to find a decent burrito. like, a real burrito. not some sad, soggy mess. i’m thinking La Taqueria. i heard that they have the best carne asada in the city. i’m also considering a pilgrimage to the Painted Ladies* - those iconic Victorian houses. it’s a tourist trap, obviously, but they’re pretty.
I’m starting to think i should just buy a bus ticket and head south. maybe to Los Angeles. or maybe just to a beach. anywhere that isn’t San Francisco. but then again, i’m kind of addicted to the chaos.
