Salamanca's Midnight Secrets and the Weather That Doesn't Care
okay so i just landed in salamanca, and let me tell you, the city has this weird vibe-like it's always two drinks deep and telling you secrets. the weather? apparently it's sitting at 8.18°c right now with a humidity of 18%. feels like 6.54°c if you ask me, which is basically sweater weather with a side of existential dread. i just checked and it's chilly but not unbearable there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.
i heard from a drunk guy at a bar that the locals swear by the cathedral's shadow for good luck. *plaza mayor is supposedly where all the magic happens, but also where all the pickpockets hang out. someone told me that if you blink too long, you'll miss the best tapas spot-it's called el gato negro, and yeah, i'm gonna check it out.
"don't trust the guy selling rosemary at the university steps," a street artist warned me. "he's got a cousin who's a magician, and your wallet will disappear faster than your dignity."
if you get bored, válorc and zamora are just a short drive away. i mean, who wouldn't want to explore more of castile and león? not me, that's for sure.
i'm staying in this weird little hostel near the río tormes, and the owner keeps talking about ghosts. apparently, the river's haunted by a nun who drowned herself over a forbidden love. sounds like a telenovela, but hey, i'm here for it.
anyway, the food here is wild. i tried hornazo, which is basically a meat pie that tastes like regret and joy had a baby. and the jamón ibérico? don't even get me started. it's like the pig was raised on dreams and sunshine.
"the best coffee in town is at café novelty," a barista whispered to me. "but don't tell anyone, or they'll ruin it."
i also heard that the university of salamanca has a hidden frog in its facade. apparently, if you find it, you'll get married within the year. i'm not looking for that kind of commitment, but i might just stare at the building for a while.
i'm planning to hit up el corte inglés tomorrow for some last-minute souvenirs. apparently, they have the best turrones in town. and if i'm feeling brave, i might even try to sneak into the old cathedral* at night. i heard the ghosts are more active after midnight.
anyway, salamanca's got this weird mix of ancient and chaotic that i can't get enough of. it's like the city's constantly whispering secrets, and i'm just here trying to catch them all. if you're ever in the area, don't miss it. just bring a sweater and a sense of adventure.
