Rotterdam Rhapsody: Rain, Ramen, and Really Weird Vibes

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 2673722 and 1752810519… honestly, those numbers just keep swirling around in my head like a bad dream. i landed in Rotterdam yesterday, and it’s… intense. the humidity is clinging to everything like a damp wool blanket - 93% and dropping, feels-like -0.82, temp_min -1.99, temp_max 0.87, pressure 1020. it’s like stepping into a perpetually misty greenhouse. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

seriously, the rain. it’s not a gentle drizzle, it’s a full-on, insistent drumming. it’s the kind of rain that makes you question all your life choices. i’m staying in this tiny hostel near the Markthal - it smells faintly of turmeric and regret, which is… something. the walls are painted a shade of orange that aggressively clashes with the grey sky.

I stumbled upon this incredible ramen place, ‘Ramen Riot,’ completely by accident. someone told me that the owner, a guy named Hiro, used to be a competitive sumo wrestler. wild, right? it was seriously good, though. like, legitimately good. I’m talking broth that could strip paint and noodles that had a satisfying chew. check out their Yelp page: https://www.yelp.com/biz/ramen-riot-rotterdam.

I spent the afternoon wandering around the Delfshaven district. it’s this super preserved area with these ridiculously colorful canal houses. it felt like stepping back in time, but with a slightly unsettling undercurrent. i overheard some locals talking about a hidden speakeasy - ‘The Serpent’s Coil’ - that only opens on Tuesdays. someone told me that the bartender mixes cocktails with actual snake venom (don’t ask). i’m not sure I’m brave enough to try that.

Speaking of weird, I saw a guy dressed as a giant rubber duck yesterday. just… existing. no explanation. no agenda. just a giant, yellow duck. it was both terrifying and strangely comforting.

I’m trying to capture the vibe of this place with my camera, but it’s proving difficult. Rotterdam feels… layered. there’s this gritty industrial edge mixed with a surprising amount of art and design. it’s like the city is simultaneously trying to be cool and desperately trying to hide its past.

I’m heading to the Cube Houses later - those tilted, boxy buildings are seriously bizarre. i heard that they’re actually quite uncomfortable to stay in, though. like, claustrophobic and slightly unsettling. i’m also planning on checking out the Markthal, which is basically a giant, indoor food market. it’s supposed to be insane.

If you get bored, Amsterdam is just a short drive away. seriously, it’s not that far. I’m thinking of grabbing some stroopwafels later - a classic Dutch treat.

Oh, and one last thing: the pigeons here are aggressively territorial. don’t make eye contact. just… don’t.

“Don’t trust the canals. They’re full of secrets.” - A local bartender, probably.

I’m trying to find some good vintage shops, but so far, it’s been a bust. I need to find some serious denim.

Seriously, the rain. it’s relentless.

“Rotterdam is a city of contrasts. Beautiful and brutal. Hopeful and haunted.” - Something a local warned me about.

I’m going to go find another ramen place. Or maybe just hide under a bridge.

Okay, that’s it for now. I need more coffee. And maybe a raincoat.
