Raindrops, Ruins, and a Restless Night in Évora

the road to evora wound through cork forests and golden plains, like something out of a dream where the sky’s always about to cry. i rolled in late, rain tapping on the windshield, and the whole town felt wrapped in mist and memory. the air was cool, not cold-11.32°c but felt like 10.57°c with that damp bite that makes you pull your scarf tighter. i just checked and it's drizzling there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

first stop: the roman temple, standing stubborn in the main square like it forgot it’s 2024. i overheard a couple arguing whether it was greek or roman-classic tourist drama. nearby, the cathedral loomed, all gothic arches and silent prayers. inside, the azulejos whispered stories in blue and white.

"Don't miss the chapel of bones," a local warned me, eyes gleaming. "It's beautiful, but it'll mess with your head."

and mess with my head it did. the capela dos ossos is exactly what it sounds like: walls built from human bones and skulls. creepy? absolutely. unforgettable? even more so. i stood there wondering who these people were, and why someone thought arranging their remains into art was a good idea.

then came the food. oh, the food. i stumbled into a tiny tasca where the owner, an older woman with a laugh like gravel, served me migas and pork that tasted like it had been cooking since the middle ages. someone told me that the best meals in evora aren't in guidebooks-they're where the locals argue over football and pour wine like it's water.

i wandered the narrow streets, popping into shops selling cork everything-wallets, shoes, even umbrellas. evora's cork industry is alive and weird. if you get bored, lisbon and beja are just a short drive away, but honestly? i didn't want to leave this sleepy town and its rain-soaked charm.

later, i sat in a café with a galao that could wake the dead, typing this out while outside the sky finally decided to unleash. evora at night feels like a secret-quiet, ancient, and a little haunted. perfect for a restless soul.
