Poznań Diaries: Cold Mornings & Coffee Shops That Stay Open Too Late

woke up in poznań with the kind of chill that makes you want to crawl back under the covers. the numbers on my phone said 0.89°c, but the "feels like" was a brutal -2.85°c. i just checked and it's freezing there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the kind of cold that makes your nose run before you even step outside.

anyway, first stop: rożantowa kawiarnia for a flat white strong enough to wake the dead. the barista had tattoos of coffee plants on her arm and warned me the almond milk was "a bit rebellious today." i believed her. it was perfect.

"don't trust the reviews online," a guy in a beanie told me while waiting for his pour-over. "most of those people have never even been to poznań."

roamed around stary rynek, where the old town square looks like someone blew up a postcard and glued it back together. pigeons outnumber tourists 3:1. i overheard a couple arguing about whether the town hall's clock show was "cute" or "a tourist trap." they were both right.

if you get bored, łódź and wrocław are just a short drive away. but honestly? poznań's got enough weird energy to keep you occupied for days. the architecture is a mix of reconstructed medieval and brutalist hangovers from the 70s. it's chaotic. i loved it.

later, i wandered into a vinyl shop where the owner was arguing with a customer about whether the doors' "strange days" was better than "waiting for the sun." classic debate. i bought neither and got lost in a second-hand bookstore instead. found a 1982 guide to poznań that called the opera house "overrated but worth a peek." still holds up.

for dinner, a local told me to try "the place with no sign." it turned out to be a basement soup kitchen run by a former banker who quit to cook borscht for strangers. the borscht was purple, hot, and tasted like regret and redemption at once. i sat next to a woman sketching the steam rising from her bowl. we didn't speak. sometimes that's the best conversation.

poznań street art

random tip: if you're into street art, check out the murals near św. wojciech church. they're not in any guidebook i saw, but they're *loud* and weird and covered in poetry in languages i couldn't place. one had a quote from someone named "m.ł.ązki" that i later learned was a local poet. no idea what it meant, but it stuck with me.

closing thought: poznań doesn't try to impress you. it just exists, cold and stubborn, with good coffee and better stories. if you're into places that feel real instead of polished, you'll like it here.
