Poughkeepsie: More Than Just a Bridge (Apparently)
okay, so. poughkeepsie. i didn’t plan to end up here. my van, bless its rusty heart, decided it needed a “rest” somewhere between Albany and… well, anywhere else. and honestly? it wasn’t the worst place to be stranded.
I just checked and it’s drizzling a persistent, almost apologetic rain. Like the sky feels bad for something, but isn’t quite sure what. The temperature’s hovering around six point seven degrees, feels like it too. Pressure’s at 1019, humidity’s a solid 51%. Not exactly beach weather, folks.
I spent most of my time wandering around *Walkway Over the Hudson. It’s… impressive. Really. Like, you can see forever. Or at least, you can see a lot of water and some very determined-looking trees. Someone told me that the walkway used to be a railroad bridge, which is wild. I mean, trains and people? Seems ambitious. You can check out some more info here: TripAdvisor.
I stumbled into this little cafe, The Bean, and the coffee was… surprisingly good. Like, really good. I overheard a couple arguing about whether oat milk was “authentic.” Honestly, the drama. I needed that caffeine jolt. They have a pretty decent Yelp page too: The Bean Yelp.
My neighbors, if you can call them that, are Beacon and New Paltz. If you get bored of Poughkeepsie’s… charm, those are just a short drive away. Beacon has Dia Beacon, apparently, which is a big art thing. New Paltz is all about hiking and cute shops. I didn’t make it to either, but I heard good things.
I also spent a ridiculous amount of time browsing vintage shops. Found a truly hideous (but amazing) sequined jacket. It’s probably going to haunt my dreams. I’m thinking of selling it on Etsy.
“Don’t go near the Locust Grove estate after dark,” a very drunk guy at the bar warned me. “They say it’s… active.”
I’m not really into ghost hunting, but it did add a certain… spice to the evening. I looked it up, and apparently, it’s a historic home with a lot of interesting stories. You can find more about it on their website: Locust Grove.
Pro-Tips (because apparently I’m a pro now):
Pack layers. Seriously. The weather is… indecisive.
Wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be doing a lot of walking.
Talk to the locals. They know the real secrets of Poughkeepsie.
Don’t trust drunk guys at bars about haunted estates. (Probably.)

Honestly, Poughkeepsie wasn’t on my list. But sometimes, the best adventures are the ones you don’t plan. It’s got a weird, quiet energy. A little rough around the edges, but… kind of endearing? I’m not sure. I’m still processing. I’m also still waiting for my mechanic to fix my van. Send help (and coffee).
