Pave the Streets of Auckland with Paint and Panic: A Street Artist's Tale

@Owen Steele3/6/2026blog

the first rain of the year hit while i was knee-deep in spray cans, the pavement glistening like a cat’s ear under the sun. checked the weather app - 26.57c, feels like 108. humidity clinging to my jeans, sweat mixing with drips. locals call this ‘the prima donna zone’ - and not just ‘cause of the roses climbing every fence

the night before graffiting a dumpster in the CBD, a shop owner yelled at me in broken english. he pointed at the sky, then at his ceiling. i nodded, being dumb, and he handed me a umbrella. next day, same spot, same drizzle. he didn’t yell. but he also didn’t smile. weird how that works here

rtc - recycle the cans, teach the kids - said a retired cop in a park yesterday. didn’t mention how his granddaughter’s mural of a giant octopus covering a wall got scraped off by the council last week. hypocrisy is cheaper than paint here

today’s favs bolding the spots cause whypo did they do that? *quicksilver bridge at dusk - spray your initials on the railings before the tide chews it. kelly taylor park - old man with a drone films pigeons, claims they’re plotting. michael jones market - rumor says the korean street food guy hides vapes in his noodles. not confirmed. yet

neighbors are ghosts in hoodies. i asked one in a bus queue which bakeries are open late. he spat on the pavement and muttered, ‘you better go to the one where the cat steals croissants.’ followed my stupid self. it’s true. the cat has a food diary system. steely management of its kingdom

overheard gossip drunk fluke in the sausage sizzle told me the ferry terminal’s underground pool is full of shark teach. not sure if it’s a joke or a metaphor for the place. probably both. locals here call themselves ‘the golden storage rolls’ - not one* woman here doesn’t have a bag of chips in their pocket. salute

got the camera out today. tried photobombing a seagull with a hamburger. it claimed better rights. footnote - this neighborhood’s WIFI signal’s weaker than my rage Abschneiden when the bus broke. but hey. at least the sunset’s a riot of colors, just like my spray bottles. and the feels-like temp tonight? still 26.57. like the whole damn town’s asleep at the job counter
