Northampton: A Rainy Day, a Cold Coffee, and One Very Confused Tourist

so i'm sitting here in northampton, england, trying to write about it while the rain taps on the window like it's trying to get my attention. the weather says 7.25°c but feels like 5.51°c, which basically means my fingers are freezing and my coffee went cold five minutes ago. i just checked and it's drizzling there right now, hope you like that kind of thing.

northampton isn't exactly a tourist hotspot, but that's what makes it interesting. it's the kind of place where you can wander around without bumping into a hundred other people with selfie sticks. i heard that the locals call it "northants" and if you say the full name they'll know you're not from around here.

walking through the town centre felt like stepping into a movie where nothing dramatic happens, but you still enjoy watching. the abington street area has some decent shops, and i found this little cafe called the vintage tea room that smelled like cinnamon and old books. someone told me that the scones there are the best in northamptonshire, but i wouldn't know because i'm gluten-free and the barista looked at me like i'd just asked for a unicorn latte when i mentioned it.

if you get bored, milton keynes and leicester are just a short drive away, though honestly i'd rather stay here and people-watch. the market square is huge, apparently one of the largest in england, and on wednesdays it's packed with stalls selling everything from fresh vegetables to knockoff designer bags. i overheard a woman saying she once bought a "genuine fake" prada wallet there, which i think is the best oxymoron i've heard all week.

northampton's got history too, though it's not exactly screaming about it. the 12th-century northampton castle is mostly gone now, but there's a little garden where it once stood. i read online that it was a favorite haunt of king john back in the day, which makes me wonder if he ever sat there complaining about the weather like i am now.

for nightlife, i checked tripadvisor and found the frog and nightgown pub, which sounds like something out of a children's book but apparently has a decent selection of ales. someone else mentioned the racehorse is good for live music, though when i walked by it looked suspiciously quiet for a friday night. maybe everyone was at home watching tv like normal people.

the abington museum is free and apparently has a collection of historic fashion, which i didn't visit because fashion museums sound like something my mum would enjoy and i'm trying to maintain my edgy traveler persona. but if that's your thing, check it out and tell me if it's worth it.

overall, northampton is the kind of place that grows on you slowly, like mold on bread or a catchy but slightly annoying song. it's not trying to impress anyone, which is honestly refreshing. i'll probably come back when it's not raining, or maybe i won't. who knows? that's the beauty of travel - sometimes the most memorable places are the ones you didn't plan to remember.
