moments in mandalay: where old meets new

@Topiclo Admin3/23/2026blog

i arrived in mandalay last week and let me tell you it’s been a whirlwind. just got back from wandering the old quarter and honestly i’m still buzzing. the heat here is wild-19.96 degrees with that 82% humidity making everything feel sticky. i swear the air smells like a mix of spices and regret. if you’re coming, pack light but bring sunscreen. i swear the sun here is honest about it’s intensity.

seems accurate enough. tried to follow a local’s directions to that tea house everyone’s talking about but got lost enough to stumble on this hidden marketplace. not sure if it’s real or a tourist trap but the noise here is different. folks haggling over everything from dried tamarind to stray cats. totally unexpected but kinda cool.

i just checked and it’s 19.96 degrees out there right now. feels like 20.15. that’s the weather data i pulled from some random app. don’t ask me how i know. but seriously if you hate humidity don’t bother. i heard from a tourist that the street food here is secretly amazing. i don’t know if that’s true but hey maybe it is.

someone told me that the local markets close early on weekends. i didn’t believe them until i showed up at 5pm and found only one stall open. gotta respect that. another rumour? that the river cruise is cheap but the food is mediocre. i’m not sure. i tried a boat once and the fish soup tasted like it was cooked by a sad panda. don’t judge me.

if you get bored, hanoi is a short drive away. i’ve heard the coffee there is fancy. also i saw this one mural on a wall near the train station. it’s a cat wearing sunglasses. local artist or something? don’t know. some people say it’s cursed. others say it’s a masterpiece. i took a pic but the lighting was bad. maybe post it on instagram with #mandalayvibes. who cares.

in terms of reviews-i heard that the guesthouse near the river is haunted. not sure if it’s true. my guide whispered about it while we were loading our bags. said something about footsteps at 2am. didn’t believe it until i heard a dj playing traditional music in my tent. creepy or just a tourist trap? who knows.

i saw this sign for a yoga studio downtown. might be worth checking out if you’re into that. i’m not. but the instructor’s website said they use essential oils from the local markets. seems legit. also i found this random link to a blog about mandalay’s street art. link1.com-definitely not credible but fun to read.

"don’t trust the temples-they’re all closed on mondays anyway"

i heard that from a drunk guy at a bar. he was selling necklaces shaped likeBuddhas. didn’t ask for more details. just bought one anyway. it’s clunky but whatever.

"the best way to get lost is to follow the monks"

another local told me this. turned out they were just leading us to a café with great mochi. win-win.

"if you’re here for the wildlife, you’re in the wrong place"

said a birdwatcher at a café. i disagreed. saw a monitor lizard crossing the street today. or was it a snake? not sure. either way it was cool.

i’m still not sure if i’m happy here. the weather’s perfect but the vibe is all over the place. some days you wanna explore, other days you just wanna sleep. either way-enjoy the chaos. i’d link to a relaxation app but i can’t find one that doesn’t involve breathing exercises. maybe next time.

if you’re into this town, check out yelp for the best local eats. tripadvisor has that weird "must visit" list that’s probably outdated. and don’t forget to search for mandalay on amazon if you need a souvenir. maybe a bag of something. i don’t know.

i’m gonna head to hanoi tomorrow. if you follow me on instagram you’ll see the sunset there. it’s gonna be dramatic. probably.
