Matera: Stone Streets and Sleepy Skies

matera's been haunting me for years. those sassi caves carved into limestone, the way the town glows gold at dusk-i finally made it here, and honestly, it's even weirder than i imagined. the air smells like damp stone and old bread, and the locals? they give you that slow, curious look like they're trying to decide if you're worth talking to.

i just checked and it's 8°c and feels like 4°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity's sitting at 88%, so yeah, bring a scarf. the wind's barely there, but the chill creeps in through your jacket like it's got nowhere else to be.

walking through the sassi feels like stepping into a film set-except it's real, and people actually live here. i overheard a guy at a bar say, "you think this is old? my nonna's been here since before the war, and she says it was old then too." classic local humor, but you can tell they're proud.

if you get bored, *bari and alberobello are just a short drive away. bari's got that gritty port city vibe, and alberobello's all trulli houses that look like they belong in a fairy tale. totally worth a day trip if you're into that sort of thing.

someone told me that the best pasta in town is at
trattoria del caveoso, but don't expect anything fancy-it's all about the nonna cooking, and she doesn't care if you're in a rush.

A harbor filled with lots of blue boats

A group of boats that are sitting in the water

A man in a small boat in the middle of a lake

want more? check out
matera turismo for official stuff or tripadvisor for reviews that might make you laugh or cry. and if you're into slow travel, slow food matera* is worth a look-they've got a map of the best local joints, and yeah, it's mostly pasta and wine.

matera's not for everyone. it's quiet, it's old, and sometimes it feels like the stones are whispering secrets you're not supposed to hear. but if you're into that kind of thing, you'll probably love it here.
