Macapá, Brazil: My Weird, Humid, Yoga-Filled Detour
macapá isn't on any yoga retreat brochure i've ever seen. i landed here because my connecting flight got "re-routed" (read: canceled) and the airline voucher was burning a hole in my pocket. the second i stepped out of the airport, the humidity hit like a *wet blanket someone left in a sauna. i just checked the weather and it's...25 degrees but feels like 26? try 96% humidity, baby. my mat was already slipping out of my hands before i even unrolled it.
this place is on the equator, which means the sun is literally directly overhead at noon. i tried a sunrise yoga session on praia do. salgado and got a sunburn on my forehead in, like, 8 minutes. the locals probably thought i was insane, sweating through my lululemon knockoff while attempting downward dog in the sand.
the amazon river is right here, wide and brown and humming with life. i took a cheap boat tour (30 reais, don't @ me) and saw dolphins and water buffalo just chilling. someone told me the best time to see caimans is at night with a flashlight, but i was too busy eating tacacá from a street vendor to care. that soup is spicy, sour, and has jambu that makes your mouth tingle like you licked a battery.
if you get bored, french guiana is just a ferry bounce away. i didn't go because my yoga practice was already suffering from the heat, but i heard from a guy at the hostel that kourou has a huge space museum. maybe next time.
this city has a fort-fortaleza de são josé-that's basically a giant, crumbling mossy relic. i tried to meditate there but the mosquitoes were having a field day. bug spray is not optional; it's your spiritual practice here. i lucked out and found a cultured little juice bar called suco do sol where they make acai so thick you could build a temple with it. yelp reviews for suco do sol say go for the acai, skip the wifi (it's slow. as. hell.).
the mercado do peixe is chaos. fish everywhere, smelling like, well, fish. i bought a mari fruit (tastes like sour candy) and a handful of castanhas (brazilian nuts). someone whispered to me that the best grilled fish is from the old lady in the blue apron, not the shiny stall near the entrance. tripadvisor forum about macapá hidden gems is full of arguments about this, but take it from me: trust the grandma.
i tried to find a yoga studio here. found one called namaste macapá on instagram. the instructor, raquel, is a saint, but class is at 6am and i was sleep-deprived from the humidity nightmares. i managed one session in a converted garage with a fan that sounded like a jet engine. we did breathing exercises to the rhythm of distant traffic and a dog barking. it was weirdly peaceful.
the equator line is marked by a obelisk on the marco zero. i stood with one foot in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern, trying to feel cosmic energy. mostly i felt sweat dripping down my back. a kid sold me a handmade bracelet for 5 reais and told me i should visit oiapoque next. maybe i will, if my mat survives the humidity.
i'm writing this from a café with aircon that's struggling. the waiter just brought me a coffee that's more sugar than coffee. typical brazil, right? i heard a rumor that the rainy season turns the streets into rivers, but i arrived in the dry part and it still feels like i'm swimming through air. if you're into raw, unfiltered travel, macapá's your jam. just pack extra towels and a sense of humor.
pro tip: drink água de coco from the green coconuts. it's cheaper than bottled water and actually tastes like paradise.
oh, and someone warned me about piranhas in the river. i didn't see any, but i kept my feet in the boat. paranoia is a great yoga pose here-practiced daily.
now i need to pack up. my flight out is in 6 hours and i still have to return my rental sandals (they're falling apart). macapá, you were weird, beautiful, and exhausting. i might dream about jambu* for weeks.
