luleå at 3am – the kind of place that whispers secrets to you

i landed in luleå at 3 am, which is when you know things are about to get weird. maybe it’s the cold? or maybe it’s the fact that the city lights look like someone spilled salt on a canvas. either way, here we are. i just checked and it’s 3 degrees right now, hope you like that kind of thing. my windbreaker is basically a second skin, and my coffee is lukewarm because who has time to wait for it to cool?

sometimes you meet people here who seem like they’re from another era. i heard that the old timber house on harbor street still has a working hearth in the living room. sounds like a movie scene, but i’m not sure if it’s a good thing or a bad thing. someone told me that the local baker here makes bread so dense it could double as a weapon. i’m not sure if that’s a compliment or a warning.

if you get bored, ljusstipping is a short drive away. it’s like luleå’s quieter cousin, if quiet people existed. i saw a tourist there last week trying to eat a reindeer sandwich. i’m not sure if they’d recommend it, but the guy looked genuinely excited.

the weather here is a mood. it’s not just cold; it’s the kind of cold that makes your bones remember winter. i heard that the sea waves here sound like whispers, but i’m not sure if that’s true or if i just want it to be true. the humidity? it’s 79%. it’s like the air is holding its breath and pretending it’s not sweaty.

one time, a local yelled at me in broken english about the ‘horrible fish at the market.’ i didn’t buy any, but i did ask why. they pointed to a sign that said ‘fresh catch’ and went back to eating their soup. i assumed they were being dramatic, but maybe the fish is horrible. i don’t know.

there’s also this weird rumor going around that the old lighthouse here is haunted. not the scary kind, more like… it’s got a reputation. i heard that if you stand at the base at midnight, you might hear a voice counting ships. i didn’t test it, but i did take a photo of the lighthouse at 2:47 am. the thing is, the photo looks normal. just a lighthouse. but what if it’s not?

i’d recommend checking out the tripadvisor luleå harbor if you’re dying to see what everyone’s talking about. or maybe yelp luleå food for local eats. i also saw a post on a local board about a ‘mysterious fog’ that rolls in everyunday. i’m not sure if it’s real or if someone just wants to sound mysterious.

here’s a map if you want to get lost:

. don’t worry, the map isn’t trying to kill you. probably.

a harbor filled with lots of boats under a cloudy sky

black and gray bicycle on gray metal bar during daytime

a bunch of boats that are sitting in the water

the vibe here is… chaotic. not in a bad way. more like if your brain is trying to hold onto too many thoughts at once. like when you’re writing a song and you forget why you started. or when you’re in a place that doesn’t care if you’re there or not. and honestly? that’s kind of nice.

i’m not sure what to call this post. maybe ‘luleå at 3am’ or ‘why did i come here?’ or ‘the kind of place that makes you question everything.’ either way, it’s not polished. it’s not pretty. it’s just… real. and sometimes that’s enough.

if you’re thinking of coming here, don’t forget to pack layers. and maybe a sense of adventure. or at least a good pair of rain boots. because if you’re not prepared for the weather, you might end up being the person everyone talks about.

p.s. i heard that the local library here has a secret room. i didn’t find it, but i did see a guy in a hat trying to hide a telescope in a bookshelf. maybe he’s a spy. maybe he’s just really into astronomy. who knows?
