Legazpi Diaries: Volcanoes, Street Eats & That One Random Bus Ride

the flight landed with a thud, and i swear the whole plane groaned in unison. Legazpi. finally. i'd been dreaming about that perfect cone shot of mayon for months, and now here i was, squinting at the horizon like a lost puppy. the weather? i just checked and it's 22°C and slightly sticky right now, hope you like that kind of thing. locals kept saying it's always 'just right' for volcano selfies, which sounds suspiciously like a marketing slogan.

anyway, first stop: the legendary *pili nut stalls near the city center. i overheard someone say, 'try the spicy ones, they'll make your tongue dance.' so i did. and yes, my tongue did a full salsa routine. totally worth it. if you get bored, Naga and Tabaco are just a short drive away, though i heard from a tipsy tricycle driver that Naga's night market is 'where dreams go to eat.'

next up, i decided to wing it and hopped on a jeepney heading toward Cagsawa Ruins. the driver looked at me like i was crazy when i asked for a 'scenic route.' but hey, that's how you find the good stuff, right? somewhere between rice paddies and random goats, i saw a sign for a 'secret waterfall.' of course i followed it. spoiler: it wasn't that secret, but the water was cold enough to wake up my jet-lagged brain.

"You haven't been to Legazpi if you didn't get rained on while eating halo-halo,"

a local vendor told me while handing me a mountain of shaved ice. she wasn't wrong. the sky opened up just as i took my first spoonful. classic.

i also checked out
Embarcadero de Legazpi because someone on a forum said it's the best place to watch the sunset while pretending you're in a rom-com. honestly, they weren't lying. the sky turned into a mess of pinks and oranges, and i may or may not have taken 47 photos of my iced coffee.

random tip:
Cafe 528 does a mean Bicol Express pasta that'll make you question all your life choices in the best way possible. also, the Wi-Fi is decent if you're pretending to work while actually scrolling through memes.

by the way, i heard through the grapevine that the best
pancit bato* is sold at a stall that doesn't even have a name-just look for the one with the longest line at 3 a.m. apparently, that's when the magic happens.

so yeah, Legazpi. it's messy, it's loud, and it's exactly the kind of chaos i didn't know i needed. if you're into volcanoes, street food that punches you in the taste buds, and random adventures that make zero sense, this place is your jam. just don't forget an umbrella. or maybe two.

for more local eats, check out TripAdvisor's Legazpi Food Guide or Yelp's hidden gems list. and if you're brave enough to chase waterfalls, this blog has some solid recs.
