Kolkata Chaos: Lost in the Labyrinth (and Maybe a Little Bit Found)
okay, so. kolkata. whew. where do i even start? i'm pretty sure my internal compass is permanently broken after this trip. i got a little…disoriented. i’m not even going to try and explain the bus system. it’s a beautiful, terrifying mess. i just checked and it's… humid. like, wearing a wet blanket humid. hope you like that kind of thing.
for context, the numbers were 1260448 and 1356830695. no idea what those are, but they popped into my head while waiting for a rickshaw that definitely wasn't coming. the weather report said temp:24.5, feels_like:25.23, temp_min:24.5, temp_max:24.5, pressure:1011, humidity:85, sea_level:1011, grnd_level:1006. basically, sticky. very sticky.
this trip was… impulsive. a total last-minute decision fueled by a craving for something completely different. i'm a freelance photographer, and i needed a shake-up. my usual haunts in [city name] were feeling...stale, you know? needing that sensory overload. i'm thinking of checking out some street photography workshops - maybe something on [local photography school link] - to push my boundaries a little.
basically, i just wandered. got gloriously lost in the narrow alleyways, surrounded by a symphony of honking, chanting, and the smell of… well, everything. the people! such energy. i’m always trying to capture those fleeting expressions, you know? the stories etched on faces. there's a palpable hum of life here, a constant motion.
gear-ish stuff:
camera (obviously): my trusty [camera model] - wouldn't leave home without it.
*extra batteries: seriously, don’t underestimate this. you’ll be snapping away.
*universal adapter: because, you know, electricity.
*comfortable shoes: you will walk. a LOT. i’m talking serious leg day.
*water bottle: stay hydrated. the humidity drains you.
and some quick tips:
*be prepared to haggle: it's part of the culture.
*trust your gut: if a situation feels off, it probably is.
*learn a few basic phrases: even just 'namaste' goes a long way.
*don’t be afraid to get lost: that’s where the magic happens.
i heard that the flower markets near [local landmark] are insane. someone told me that the best street food is found from the little carts tucked away in the side streets - but also warned me about questionable hygiene. always a gamble, right? there were rumors of a hidden temple somewhere in the old city, accessible only by a series of unmarked doorways. i didn’t find it, but the search was half the fun.
speaking of, the neighbors are…well, they’re neighbors*. incredibly welcoming, but also incredibly curious. if you get bored, [cities] are just a short drive away. i'm thinking of venturing out to [nearby town] for a day trip. i’m also eyeing up a rickshaw tour - purely for the experience, of course.
in the evenings, the air fills with the sounds of music and laughter. i spent an hour just sitting in a small cafe, sipping chai and watching the world go by. pure bliss. i definitely need to check out some of the local music venues - maybe something like [local music venue link]. someone told me the jazz scene here is surprisingly vibrant.
honestly, kolkata is a sensory explosion. it's chaotic, it's overwhelming, it's… amazing. i’m already planning my return. maybe with a slightly better grasp of the bus system. definitely needing a strong cup of coffee when i get back to [city name]. and maybe a long nap. check out TripAdvisor for some attraction ideas! and Yelp is good for finding food! and this local board has some local events!.
it's a city that gets under your skin, i think. and i’m strangely grateful for the disorientation.
