Knidos: Ancient Ruins, Turquoise Waters, and a Very Sleepy Goat
okay so here's the thing about knidos... it's basically a ghost town with really good wifi. or maybe a ghost town with really bad wifi. i can't tell anymore because my phone keeps glitching out every time i try to upload a photo of the ancient theater.
anyway, i just checked and it's 11°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. feels like 10°c apparently, which is basically sweater weather if you're british, or 'why am i wearing shorts?' if you're me.
now, the ruins themselves? stunning. like, jaw-droppingly beautiful in that 'i can't believe people built this without power tools' kind of way. the ancient theater looks out over the aegean and i'm pretty sure i saw a dolphin or maybe it was just a very athletic seagull.
i heard from a guy selling pomegranate juice that the best time to visit is actually at sunset, but also that the juice guy is full of it because sunset is when all the mosquitos come out to party. so, you know, choose your fighter.
if you get bored, datca and bodrum are just a short drive away, though 'short' in turkey might mean anything from 20 minutes to 3 hours depending on whether you run into a herd of goats or a very slow tractor.
and speaking of goats, i met one that was apparently the mayor of the ruins. at least that's what the old woman selling handmade bracelets told me. she also said the goat once chased a tourist up a column, which sounds like an urban legend but also like something that could totally happen here.
"the goat's name is marco," she said, "and he's very friendly unless you have food. then he's a monster."
so yeah, knidos is weird and wonderful and slightly confusing and exactly the kind of place where you'll lose track of time and then realize you've been sitting on a 2000-year-old rock for three hours. would recommend.
