Kingsport, Tennessee: Where the Mountains Whisper and the Coffee Roasts Loud

it's 4am and i'm staring at a weather app that says -4.31°C, feels like -4.31°C, and i'm wondering if my fingers will fall off before i finish typing this. i'm in kingsport, tennessee, and the air tastes like pine needles and regret. the kind of cold that makes you question every life choice leading up to this moment. but hey, that's travel, right?

i rolled into town after a 6-hour drive from nashville, my car's heater barely keeping up with the freeze. the first thing i noticed? the mountains. they're not kidding around here. they loom like ancient guardians, and if you listen closely, you can almost hear them whispering secrets from the appalachian trail. or maybe that's just the wind. hard to tell.

*downtown kingsport is a mix of old brick buildings and new coffee shops. i stopped by the Black Sheep on broadway, mostly because the name made me laugh. the barista, a guy named jake with a beard that could house a family of squirrels, told me the best thing to do here is "just get lost." so i did. wandered into a vintage store called Retro Revival, where i found a denim jacket that smelled like someone's grandpa. bought it anyway.

i overheard two locals at a bar called
The Tap Room talking about bay's mountain park. "it's haunted," one of them said, half-joking. "or maybe it's just the wind." either way, i'm adding it to the list. also heard that warrior's path state park is great for hiking, but only if you don't mind sharing the trail with a few too many squirrels. they're aggressive here.

food in kingsport is...interesting. had lunch at The Bagel Exchange, which is exactly what it sounds like. the bagels are legit, but the cream cheese options are next-level weird. pumpkin spice in april? sure, why not. dinner was at The Cookery, a farm-to-table spot that feels like it was ripped straight out of brooklyn and dropped in the mountains. the risotto was good, but the vibe was better.

if you're into
weird local history, kingsport has you covered. the murray city community park is named after a guy who apparently invented something important but nobody remembers what. there's a statue of him looking confused, which feels appropriate. also, the bays mountain planetarium is supposedly haunted by a janitor who died during a meteor shower. or so i heard.

weather here is a whole mood. i just checked and it's -4.31°C there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity is 74%, which sounds mild until you step outside and realize your nose hairs are freezing. bring layers. and maybe a thermos of something strong.

if you get bored,
bristol and johnson city are just a short drive away. bristol's got that famous speedway, and johnson city is...well, it's there. i haven't explored much yet, but i hear the coffee scene is popping off.

random tips from a slightly delirious traveler:*
- bring a reusable water bottle. the tap water here tastes like it's been filtered through a limestone cave.
- download a good podcast. the mountains block cell service in some areas, and you'll want something to listen to while you pretend to enjoy nature.
- don't trust the squirrels. they're watching you.

i'm still not sure what i think of kingsport. it's quiet, a little strange, and colder than a polar bear's toenails. but there's something about it that sticks with you. maybe it's the mountains. maybe it's the coffee. or maybe it's just the fact that i'm typing this with frozen fingers and a head full of half-remembered conversations. either way, i'll be back. probably in the summer, when my nose hairs stand a chance.
