Kiel Chaos: A Whirlwind in Germany

okay, so kiel. where do i even begin? i landed here with… well, let’s just say minimal planning and a whole lotta hope. and the numbers i saw? 300075 and 1792909050. felt like a cryptic message from the universe, right? or maybe just airport parking fees. who knows.

The weather? honestly? it’s…a damp hug. like someone wrapped you in a slightly chilly, pleasantly smells-of-salt-water blanket. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. maybe pack a light jacket, just in case. the pressure is 1019, humidity's a bit clingy at 61%, and the ground level feels strangely…grounded.

i’m a digital nomad through and through, chasing that elusive perfect cup of coffee and a decent wifi signal. everyone warned me about the public transport being a bit of a maze, but honestly? it's an adventure. i stumbled onto a tiny bakery - *Bäckerei Schmidt - down a side street. the smell of fresh bread? chef’s kiss. seriously, forget the sights for an hour and just get a Schrippe.

German street scene

my little crash pad is in a surprisingly cool neighborhood near the
Waterfront. it’s not super touristy, which is a huge win. some folks around here seem to be mostly locals, and other cities are just a short drive away if you need a change of scenery. i heard that the Fischmarkt (fish market) is legendary - supposedly goes back centuries! someone told me that the best smoked fish is found at a little stall near the harbor, but you gotta get there early.

Kiel harbor

i’m trying to embrace the chaos, and mostly i’m succeeding. there’s a certain charm to Kiel - a quiet energy. it’s not about ticking off a list of must-sees, but about getting lost in the little details, like watching the boats bob in the harbor or listening to the locals chatting in German. i even overheard a group of students complaining about the library being
too quiet. apparently, it’s a scandal!

and the food! so much sausage. i'm not even kidding. i’m attempting to learn a few basic German phrases from Duolingo (it’s… a work in progress), and relying heavily on Google Translate. someone warned me to avoid ordering anything with “Rillette” on the menu - apparently, there’s a
very strong opinion on that. i’m not sure what to make of that.

Pro-tip*: download a translation app! seriously. it’ll save you from a lot of awkward pointing and gesturing. Also, don’t be afraid to get lost. you’ll discover some hidden gems that way. i was trying to find a specific park, and ended up stumbling upon a tiny courtyard with a fountain. pure serendipity.

Kiel cityscape

anyway, that’s kiel for now. i’m off to find more Schrippen and maybe attempt to decipher the local public transport schedule. check out TripAdvisor for more info, or Yelp if you’re looking for food. you can also check out some local groups on Facebook for events. wish me luck!
