Indianapolis: Where the Cornfields Whisper and the Weather Bites

okay, so i’m back. Indianapolis. Who knew? Honestly, I booked this trip on a whim after seeing a ridiculously cheap flight. My usual gig - drumming for a touring indie band - had a sudden lull, and I figured, why not? I needed a change of scenery, something… different. And different it was.

I just checked and it’s… a brisk, damp sort of day. Like someone wrung out a grey towel over the whole city. The temperature’s hovering around eight degrees Celsius, feels like four. Not exactly beach weather, folks. Pack layers. Seriously. I’m shivering just thinking about it.

I spent most of my time wandering around *Mass Ave, which is… surprisingly cool. Lots of little shops, art galleries, and restaurants. I stumbled into this tiny vintage store - “Retro Revival” - and nearly lost an hour sifting through old band tees and questionable 80s fashion. Found a killer denim jacket though, so worth it. Check out their Yelp page: https://www.yelp.com/biz/retro-revival-indianapolis.

Food-wise, it’s… hearty. Lots of meat. I had this amazing pulled pork sandwich at a place called “Piggy’s” - seriously, the best I’ve had in ages. Someone told me that the ribs are even better, but I was too full to try. Next time, definitely. I also checked out a few breweries - Indianapolis seems to be
really into craft beer. Sun King Brewery was a solid choice.

I did a walking tour of the
Indiana State Museum, which was surprisingly interesting. Learned a lot about the state’s history - who knew Indiana had such a rich past? It’s not all cornfields and basketball, apparently. You can find more info here: https://indianamuseum.org/.

Speaking of cornfields… if you get bored, Lafayette and Muncie are just a short drive away. Just saying.

I overheard some drunk guy at a bar complaining about the Monument Circle. Apparently, it’s a tourist trap. He said something about “too many pigeons and not enough character.” Harsh, but I kind of get it. It’s… imposing, I guess. But not exactly charming. Still, worth seeing once. Honestly, Indianapolis wasn’t what I expected. It’s… real. Not flashy or glamorous, but genuine. The people are friendly, the food is good, and there’s a surprising amount to do. I’d definitely go back. Maybe in the summer, though. I’m not a huge fan of shivering.

Pro-Tips for Indy:

*Wear layers. Seriously, I can’t stress this enough.
*Check out Mass Ave. It’s the heart of the city’s arts and culture scene.
*Try the pulled pork. You won’t regret it.
*Don’t be afraid to venture outside the downtown area. There’s a lot to discover.
*Bring comfortable shoes.* You’ll be doing a lot of walking.

I’m already thinking about my next adventure. Maybe somewhere warm… somewhere with sunshine… somewhere without pigeons. But for now, I’m happy to be home, thawing out and reliving my Indianapolis experience. Check out this local board for more tips: https://www.indywithkids.com/
