Hoi An Diaries: Chasing Lanterns and Sticky Rice

@Adam Wright3/3/2026blog

it was supposed to be a quick stop, but hoi an had other plans. the kind of place where you blink and suddenly it’s been three days, your clothes smell like incense, and you’re fluent in ordering “cao lầu” with your eyes closed. the weather? sticky. like, 24.63°c sticky, 94% humidity sticky. my hair looked like it had been through a blender. but that’s the magic, right? you sweat through your shirt and still fall in love with the glow of lanterns bouncing off the river at dusk. someone told me that the best banh mi in town is at a place called “madam khánh”-apparently, anthony bourdain once stood there and ate one. i didn’t fact-check, but i did eat there, and yeah, it was that good. if you get bored, da nang and hue are just a short drive away, but honestly, hoi an’s got enough charm to keep you busy for a week. the old town is a maze of tailors, tea shops, and tourists trying to take the perfect lantern photo. i overheard a local say the best time to visit is during the full moon festival, when they turn off the streetlights and the whole town glows like a dream. i didn’t plan it, but i got lucky. the river was full of floating candles, and for a second, i forgot about my wet socks. pro tip: bring cash. lots of it. the ATMs are sketchy, and most places don’t take cards. also, wear comfy shoes-the cobblestone streets will ruin your vibe if you’re in heels. i stayed in an Airbnb near an bang beach, which was a 10-minute bike ride from the chaos of the old town. the beach was empty, the water was warm, and the sunsets were the kind that make you question your life choices-like, why am i not here all the time? if you’re into history, the my son ruins are worth the trip, but don’t expect much signage-it’s more of a “wander and wonder” kind of vibe. and if you’re a coffee snob (guilty), the cafes along tran hung dao street will keep you caffeinated and happy. just don’t expect your latte to look like it does back home-vietnam does coffee its own way, and that’s part of the charm. i just checked and it’s 24.63°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. oh, and bring a rain jacket-the downpours are sudden but kinda poetic. hoi an, you sneaky little town, i’ll be back.
