Hannover, You Weird Little Place (and My Drumsticks Are Still Sticky)
okay, so. hannover. i didn’t plan to be in hannover. touring with the band, you know? one minute we’re in cologne, the next we’re…here. it’s…something. i just checked and the air feels like a damp sock - about eight degrees, hovering around that. hope you like that kind of thing.
Honestly, the vibe is…muted. Like someone turned down the saturation on the whole city. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s…calm. Which is a welcome change after the chaos of the last few weeks. We played at this place, the ZAG Arena - pretty decent sound, surprisingly. The crowd was…enthusiastic, in a quiet german sort of way.
I spent most of yesterday wandering around the Altstadt. It’s got that classic half-timbered thing going on, which is nice. I stumbled across this tiny little cafe, “Kaffeestube am Markt,” and had the best apfelstrudel. Seriously. You gotta go. Check it out on Yelp: https://www.yelp.com/.
Someone told me that the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) is worth seeing. Apparently, it’s got a really impressive dome. I haven’t made it there yet, but it’s on the list. I’m also trying to find a decent record store. My drumsticks are still sticky from some weird pastry i bought at a market, and i need something to distract me.
I overheard some locals gossiping about the Eilenried park. Apparently, it’s huge - like, seriously huge. Perfect for getting lost in, which is exactly what i need right now. I’m thinking of renting a bike tomorrow and just…exploring. TripAdvisor says it’s a must-see: https://www.tripadvisor.com/.
*The Marktkirche is pretty cool too, all gothic and imposing. I spent a good hour just staring at the stained glass.
if you get bored, braunschweig and wolfsburg are just a short drive away. I’m not sure i’ll have time to check them out, but it’s good to know they’re there.
I’m trying to be productive, you know? Researching new drum patterns, listening to local music…but mostly i’m just wandering and eating pastries. It’s a good life, really.
Oh! I almost forgot. A local warned me about the traffic around the Opernhaus*. Apparently, it’s a nightmare. Take the tram, he said. Wise words.
I’m also checking out some local art. There’s a gallery called “Kunsthaus Hannover” that looks interesting. https://www.kunsthaus-hannover.de/. Maybe i’ll find some inspiration for a new drum solo.
Honestly, hannover isn’t going to win any awards for being the most exciting city in the world. But it’s…pleasant. And the pastries are amazing. That’s gotta count for something, right?
I'm thinking of hitting up a local board to see if anyone knows of any good late-night eats. https://www.hannover.de/
