flores, guatemala: a sticky digital nomad's paradise
so here i am, in this little island town called flores, guatemala, and honestly? it's exactly the kind of place that makes you question why you ever lived anywhere else. except for the fact that it's always a bit damp. i mean, i just checked the weather and it's that sticky, warm kind of hug that makes you feel like you're always a little damp. but honestly? i'm not even mad about it. it's like the air is giving you a constant, gentle squeeze. and the humidity? 94%? that's not a typo, that's just how it is here. you learn to embrace the dampness. it's part of the vibe.
this place is small, like, really small. you can walk around the entire island in about 20 minutes. but that doesn't mean there's nothing to do. oh no. there's a whole lot of nothing to do, which is perfect if you're a digital nomad trying to get some work done without distractions. the wifi at [some cafe] is surprisingly decent, and the coffee? well, let's just say it's functional. but hey, if you need a break, there's always the view of the lake. and the occasional howler monkey making a racket at 5am. that's a wake-up call you don't need an alarm for.
if the vibe here gets too mellow, you can always hop a quick ride to tikal for some ancient ruins and a whole different kind of jungle. but honestly? i'm not sure you need to leave. flores has this way of pulling you in. the streets are painted in bright colors, and the locals are friendly to the point of absurdity. you'll be walking down the street and someone will offer you a papaya. just because. it's that kind of place.
now, about food. someone told me that the ceviche at the market is so fresh it practically jumps on your fork. i haven't tried it yet because i'm still living off of empanadas and beans. but i'm told it's a must. and there's this one spot called [restaurant name] that everyone raves about. i heard that they have a soup that'll change your life. or at least your taste buds. you can read more about local spots on the guatemala travel blog.
and if you're looking for things to do, well, the obvious one is tikal. but there's also this lake, lake petén itzá, which is huge and blue and perfect for a dip when the humidity is making you melt. you can also check out the local market for souvenirs and snacks. and if you're into history, the island itself is built on top of some ancient maya ruins. you can literally walk on history.
but here's the thing: this place is not for everyone. if you need constant stimulation and a bustling city life, you might get bored. but if you want to slow down, work from your laptop with a view, and just be, then flores is your jam. it's a bit of a hidden gem, but it's starting to get noticed. you can see what other travelers think on tripadvisor and yelp.
so there you have it. my little slice of paradise in the middle of nowhere. and yes, it's sticky. and yes, it's humid. but it's also peaceful. and beautiful. and full of surprises. i think i could get used to this.
