Dust & Echoes in Marrakech: A Slightly Broken Trip

@Topiclo Admin3/20/2026blog

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm mint tea. the humidity here is… intense. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. 32.36 degrees, feels like 30.89, pressure 1008, humidity 27. it’s clinging to everything like a really persistent admirer. i landed yesterday, and honestly, it’s been a beautiful, chaotic mess. the air smells like spices and something vaguely animal - probably a donkey, let’s be real.

I’m staying in this riad - Riad Yasmine, apparently - which is gorgeous, all cool tile and trickling fountains. it’s tucked away in the medina, which is basically a labyrinth designed to confuse tourists and sell you rugs. i almost got lost for an hour trying to find my way back to the courtyard. almost.

I was trying to capture the light, you know? the way it hits the ochre walls at sunset. my camera’s been acting up - the autofocus is completely wonky - but i’m still trying to get some decent shots. it’s like wrestling with a stubborn mule, honestly.

I overheard some seriously wild gossip at the cafe this morning. someone told me that the best tagine in the city is at Nomad, but also that it’s ridiculously overpriced. i heard that… the snake charmers are actually trained to be terrified of snakes, they just put on a show. it’s a whole thing. i’m not entirely sure i believe it, but it’s entertaining.

Speaking of entertainment, the Djemaa el-Fna square at night is insane. it’s like a thousand tiny dramas unfolding at once - storytellers, musicians, food stalls, henna artists… it’s overwhelming, but in a good way. i tried some snail soup. don’t ask.

Here’s the gear list, because apparently, i need to document everything. it’s a compulsion, i think.

Camera (mostly broken)
Extra batteries (running low)
Notebook (covered in coffee stains)
Sunglasses (essential for dealing with the sun)
Sandals (because cobblestones are evil)
A healthy dose of cynicism

I’m planning on checking out the Jardin Majorelle tomorrow - Yves Saint Laurent’s garden. apparently, it’s a little oasis of calm amidst the madness. i need a break from the sensory overload. i’m thinking of grabbing a pastry from a local bakery - maybe something with almonds and honey.

If you get bored, Casablanca is just a short drive away. it’s a bit of a trek, but i’m always up for an adventure (or at least a change of scenery). I’m also considering a day trip to the Atlas Mountains. I saw a sign for a Berber village - maybe I’ll check that out.

I found this little shop selling leather goods - seriously beautiful stuff. the guy running it was a total character, kept offering me tea and telling me stories about his family. he said, and i quote, ‘the best things in life are found in the dust.’ deep, right?

I’m trying to find a decent coffee shop, but honestly, the mint tea is starting to win me over. it’s surprisingly good. i’m thinking of investing in a little tea set. maybe.

Seriously, be careful with the scooters. They’re everywhere, and they don’t care about anything. I almost got flattened yesterday. It was… a learning experience.

And one last thing: don’t be afraid to get lost. That’s where the real magic happens. Just… maybe bring a map. Or a really good sense of direction. Or both.

Someone told me that the best way to experience Marrakech is to simply wander, get lost, and let the city surprise you. It’s true, but also terrifying.

Okay, I’m going to go find some more tea. Wish me luck.
