Discovering Dhaka: A Budget Student's Guide to the Chaos

woke up in dhaka feeling the humid air seeping through my pores. this city's alive, man. it's 23.49° out so prepare to sweat - but hey, that's what showers are for. I heard someone say it's the "perfect weather for exploring" but i think they were being sarcastic. or maybe they just love feeling like they're swimming through the air.

if you're staying in dhaka, i gotta recommend checking out the national museum. it's a treasure trove of history, with artifacts dating way back. my buddy told me "if you don't know dhaka's past, you don't know dhaka at all." deep, right?

when you're tired of the hustle, take a breather at ramna park. it's this serene patch of green that seems like it's from a different world. someone told me they spent an entire day there just watching the birds and people passing by. if you're feeling adventurous, gather some friends and take a trip to sonargaon, the ancient capital. it's a history nerd's dream come true.

"I heard that the street food here is the best in the world, but I've also heard horror stories about people getting sick. I guess it's all about taking a gamble for the sake of flavor."

dhaka's the kind of place where you can just wander and find something amazing. but if you're looking for more structure, here's a quick list of essentials:

  • dhaka university for its stunning architecture
  • lalbagh fort for a touch of history
  • the buriganga river for a sunset boat ride
  • and of course, the many bazaars for souvenirs and local crafts

oh, and a heads up - if you're a light sleeper, bring earplugs. the city doesn't sleep, and it doesn't want you to either. but that's part of its charm. it's dirty, it's loud, it's overwhelming, and it's beautiful. dhaka's not for the faint of heart, but if you're willing to jump in headfirst, it'll reward you with experiences you'll never forget.
