Delhi's Dust and Dreams: A Botanist's Bewilderment
okay, so. delhi. wow. just…wow. i’m still picking bits of something out of my hair, i think it might be pollen, or maybe just general delhi-ness. i’m a botanist, right? I study plants. I thought I was prepared. I was not.
I landed, and the air just…hit. It’s like someone bottled the entire monsoon season and then cranked up the heat. I just checked and it's hovering around twenty-six degrees, feels like the same, give or take. Hope you like that kind of thing. I’m used to damp moss and ferns, not this…this shimmering haze. It’s beautiful in a weird, apocalyptic way, though. Like a painting by someone who’s never seen green.
I’m staying in *Karol Bagh, which is…an experience. The noise! The smells! The sheer density of everything. It’s overwhelming, but in a strangely invigorating way. I spent the first few hours just wandering, trying to absorb it all. I stumbled upon this tiny spice market - the aromas were insane. I bought a bag of something called ras el hanout - apparently, it’s a blend of thirty-two spices. Thirty-two! My spice rack back home is pathetic. I need to rethink my life choices.
I’m trying to document the urban flora here. It’s fascinating. Plants are everywhere, pushing through cracks in the pavement, clinging to walls, defying the concrete jungle. I’ve already identified a few species of Alternanthera - they’re surprisingly resilient. And the bougainvillea! Oh, the bougainvillea. It’s exploding everywhere in these vibrant shades of pink and purple. It’s almost mocking the rest of the landscape.
Someone told me that the air quality is…not great. Apparently, it fluctuates wildly. I’m trying to avoid peak traffic times. I’ve been relying heavily on bottled water and hand sanitizer. It’s a bit paranoid, maybe, but better safe than sorry. I saw a guy selling these little air purifiers that clip onto your bag - might have to invest in one.
I’ve been trying to find some good local nurseries. I found one listed on TripAdvisor - https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g304293-d1177887-Reviews-Garden_Center_Delhi-New_Delhi_Delhi.html. It’s a bit out of the way, but the reviews seem promising. Apparently, they have a great selection of native plants.
I overheard some drunk advice at a chai stall - apparently, you have to try the paratha from this place called Paranthe Wali Gali. It’s a narrow lane completely dedicated to stuffed flatbreads. I’m skeptical, but also intrigued. I’ll probably check it out tomorrow. I’m also looking for a good place to get some lassi - I’ve heard that Chandni Chowk has the best. https://www.yelp.com/biz/old-dilli-lassi-chandni-chowk
If you get bored, Jaipur and Agra* are just a short drive away. I might take a weekend trip to see the Taj Mahal. It’s a bit touristy, I know, but it’s supposed to be incredible. I’m also trying to find some local botanical gardens - I saw a listing on a Delhi forum https://www.delhiforums.com/discuss/delhi-gardens-parks/.
I’m starting to understand why people are both captivated and overwhelmed by Delhi. It’s chaotic, it’s intense, it’s…a lot. But it’s also vibrant, it’s alive, and it’s full of surprises. I’m only here for a few weeks, but I already feel like I’ve experienced a lifetime. I need to find a good mosquito net, though. Seriously. Those little guys are relentless. And maybe a stronger coffee. I’m going to need it.
