Davao Del Norte: Sweat, Mangoes, and Seriously Weird Vibes

okay, so like, i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and questionable instant coffee right now. i just landed back from Davao Del Norte, Philippines, and my brain feels like a scrambled egg. it was… intense. the humidity was hitting 35.42, feels like 40, and the pressure was 1008 - seriously, my ears popped like three times on the flight. the temp min was 29.16, max was 29.16, which, honestly, just felt like a constant, sticky warmth. i’m not gonna lie, i’m already craving a cold shower and a spreadsheet.

first off, the mangoes. jesus. they’re everywhere. like, aggressively everywhere. you can’t walk five feet without someone trying to sell you a bag of them. i bought, like, a dozen and i’m pretty sure i’m going to be dreaming in shades of orange for the next week. i found this amazing little stall near the market - seriously, check it out: https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g298463-Davao_Region_Mindanao.html. it’s called ‘Aling Nena’s Mangoes’ - don’t ask me how i found it, i just wandered and stumbled upon it. pure luck, i guess.

and the people? man, they’re…loud. and friendly. and constantly offering you something. i swear, i got offered a ride, a plate of adobo, a bracelet, and a business card within the first hour. it’s a lot. i overheard some drunk advice at a bar last night - someone told me that the best way to experience Davao is to just get lost. seriously. just wander around and see what happens. it’s probably how i ended up at that weird goat farm.

Speaking of weird, the goat farm. okay, so, it was…a thing. a small, slightly dilapidated farm with, like, twenty goats and a guy named Mang Tomas who seemed genuinely thrilled to talk about goat husbandry. i don’t even know why i went. i just followed a guy with a machete down a dirt road. it was a choice. a bad choice, probably. but hey, that’s travel, right?

*Pro-Tip: Bring bug spray. Seriously. Like, lots* of bug spray. And maybe a hazmat suit. I’m not kidding. I’m still finding mosquito bites.

I also checked the weather and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. i found this great resource for local events: https://www.davaocitylife.com/. it’s a bit chaotic, but it’s got everything from festivals to farmers markets.

If you get bored, Davao City is just a short drive away. I heard that the Eden Nature Park is worth a visit - apparently, it’s got waterfalls and everything. i didn’t make it there, but i’m adding it to the list for next time.

And the food! don’t even get me started on the food. adobo, sinigang, lechon - i ate my weight in Filipino food. i found a fantastic Yelp review of a roadside eatery: https://www.yelp.com/biz/luz-restaurant-davao-city. it’s called Luz Restaurant and it’s supposedly the best place to get crispy pata. i didn’t try it, but i’m adding it to my list.

I heard that Luz Restaurant is the best place to get crispy pata. Seriously, go there. Just go.

Honestly, Davao Del Norte is just…a lot. It’s overwhelming, it’s chaotic, it’s sweaty, and it’s absolutely unforgettable. it’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re looking for an authentic, off-the-beaten-path experience, it’s worth checking out. just be prepared to embrace the weird. and the mangoes.

I’m already plotting my return. maybe i’ll even visit that goat farm again. (probably not.)
