chasing threads through novi sad: a vintage picker’s messy diary

i woke up in novi sad with my vintage bag slung over one shoulder, the air biting at 7.6 degrees but feeling like 3 thanks to the wind that seems to whistle through the austrian‑era facades. i peeked at my phone and saw 7.6°C, feels like a brisk 3°C, perfect for digging through racks without melting. the humidity hangs at 87%, making the cobblestones slick and the scent of fresh bread from a nearby boulangerie drift into the alley.

“i heard that the flea market on domeniko street hides a stash of 70s leather jackets if you know which stall to ask the old guy about,”

after a few hours of sifting through dusty denim and forgotten silk scarves, i stopped for a coffee at a spot recommended on TripAdvisor. the barista, a tattooed kid with a pierced eyebrow, whispered that the new rooftop bar over at the riverfront was supposedly “the place to catch sunset beats” - drunk advice i scribbled on a napkin.

“they say the vintage shop behind the cathedral has a hidden room full of military coats from the ’90s, but you gotta bring a friend who can sniff out the real deals,”

i continued my hunt, navigating past the statue of Jovan Jovanović Zmaj, feeling the pressure of 1012 hPa press gently on my chest like a reminder to keep moving. later, i checked Yelp for a bite and landed at Kafana Zdrava, where the waiter swore the Ćevapi were “better than grandma’s” - a classic local rumor.

“if you’re lucky, the guy at the corner stall trades vinyl for old denim, and he’ll tell you stories about the night the city lights went out during the ’99 bombardment,”

as the day faded, i walked toward the danube, the streetlights flickering on like tired fireflies. neighbors-wise, if you get tired of novi sad’s charm, belgrade is just an hour’s drive away, or you could swing north to subotica for a different pace. the map below shows where I wandered.

here are a few snaps from the hunt:

A man playing a guitar in front of a group of people

A crowd of people standing around a street at night

A close‑up of a weathered leather jacket hanging on a wooden rack

that’s it for now - keep your eyes peeled, your bags light, and your thrift radar on.
