Chasing Heatwaves and History in Angeles City
okay, so angeles city isn't exactly on everyone's radar unless you're into pampanga's weird mix of colonial ghosts and karaoke bars. but i found myself here after a friend said "you gotta see the old base area before it disappears." so here i am, sweating through my shirt like a marathon runner who forgot to hydrate.
i just checked and it's 28.07°c there right now, feels like 31.96°c, and the humidity is sitting at 78%. hope you like that kind of thing. i don't. but hey, that's part of the charm, right?
anyway, first stop: clark museum. someone told me that the aircon barely works, but the dioramas are so detailed you forget you're melting. and they weren't wrong. i spent an hour staring at miniature jeeps and soldiers, pretending i was back in 1945.
"if you want the real story, talk to the old guys at the park,"
a tricycle driver muttered when i asked about the base history. so i did. and yeah, they've got stories that'll make your hair stand on end.
later, i wandered into fields avenue because apparently that's the place to be. not my scene, but i grabbed a cold san miguel at a corner bar and overheard some drunk advice about a hidden speakeasy behind a laundromat. i didn't find it, but the hunt was half the fun.
if you get bored, san fernando and mabalacat are just a short drive away. i heard san fernando's lantern festival is insane if you time it right.
for food, *Aling Lucing's is legendary for sisig, but i went to Apo's Diner because a local warned me the lines at Aling Lucing are insane. Apo's was quieter, greasier, and perfect.
if you're planning to stay, Hotel Sogo is cheap and central, but i heard Phoenix Hotel* has better vibes if you want something less... fluorescent.
anyway, angeles city isn't for everyone. but if you like history with a side of chaos, it's worth the sweat.
