Cebu City Nights: Chasing Sunset Beats and Street Food Dreams
so here i am, typing this from a tiny hostel balcony in cebu city, the kind where the fan sounds like it's about to take off. i just checked and it's 23°c there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the humidity is doing its best to turn me into a human sponge, but honestly, it's part of the charm.
walking down osmena boulevard earlier, i passed a street vendor selling *puso (hanging rice) and lechón that smelled like heaven wrapped in crispy skin. someone told me that the best pungko-pungko stalls are hidden near the old colon street market, but you gotta get there before 7pm or they're sold out. classic.
i overheard a local saying that the IT park area is where all the digital nomads hang out, sipping third-wave coffee and pretending they're not just avoiding the heat. if you get bored, bohol and siquijor are just a short drive and ferry ride away. totally worth it if you're into weird vibes and tiny primates.
last night i ended up at a tiny bar in lahug where a touring session drummer was jamming with a local indie band. the place was so small, i could've touched the cymbals from my seat. they played until 2am, and i swear the drummer's energy was the only thing keeping the ceiling from caving in.
if you're into history, the fort san pedro is worth a visit, though i heard from a drunk expat that the real stories are better heard at the carbon market at dawn. apparently, the old vendors there trade in gossip as much as fish and mangoes.
i'm planning to check out the temple of leah tomorrow, mostly because someone said it looks like a greek tragedy set in the middle of the jungle. will report back if it lives up to the hype.
for now, it's back to the balcony with a cold san miguel* and the distant sound of a karaoke machine somewhere in the neighborhood. cebu city doesn't sleep, it just sings off-key until sunrise.
