Bristol: Rain, Rumors, and Really Weird Vibes
okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on fumes and lukewarm coffee. 2648187 and 1826609378… honestly, what even are those numbers? felt like a fever dream after that dodgy street food stall. the temp was 12.3, feels like 11.1, min 10.99, max 12.9, pressure 1011, humidity 58. sea level 1011, ground level 1007. yeah, that’s… something. it’s like the air itself is holding its breath.
Bristol. it’s… intense. i landed yesterday and immediately felt like i’d stumbled into a slightly off-key indie film. the rain, man, the rain. it’s not a gentle drizzle, it’s like the sky is actively trying to drown you in melancholy. i just checked and it's...there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. i’m staying in this tiny place near the Harbourside - it’s basically a converted shipping container, which is cool, but the plumbing is… questionable.
I spent the morning wandering around, mostly just trying to avoid getting soaked. stumbled across this amazing record shop, ‘Vinyl Vortex’ - seriously, the guy behind the counter looked like he’d wrestled a badger and won. he gave me some drunk advice about checking out St. Nicholas Market. someone told me that the cheese stall is legendary, but also that you might get aggressively offered a second helping. take it with a grain of salt, obviously.
Speaking of markets, I hit up St. Nicholas Market. It’s a chaotic, brilliant mess. Street food everywhere, vintage clothes piled high, and the smell of a thousand different spices hanging in the air. I grabbed a scotch egg (don’t judge) and a pint of cider. It was… an experience. I overheard a group of guys arguing about the best way to paint a mural on the old Arnott’s Mill - apparently, there’s a fierce rivalry between two local street artists.
I’m trying to document everything, but my camera’s battery died about an hour in. which is a tragedy, because I got some amazing shots of the Brunel Warehouse. it’s seriously imposing, all brick and iron and history. I’m thinking of checking out the M Shed museum later - apparently, it’s got some fascinating stuff about Bristol’s maritime past.
My neighbors are… interesting. if you get bored, Cardiff is just a short drive away, and Bath is a bit further. there’s this old woman who lives across the hall, Mrs. Higgins, she’s a retired opera singer and she practices scales at 6 am. it’s… a lot. but she also leaves out biscuits, so I can’t really complain.
I found this little bar called ‘The Plough’, it’s tucked away down a side street and it’s got a seriously cool vibe. the bartender, Liam, he’s a session drummer - he plays at a bunch of local gigs. he told me about a secret underground music scene happening in the tunnels beneath the city.
Someone told me that the tunnels are haunted by the ghost of a Victorian chimney sweep. Apparently, he still tries to collect coal dust. Don’t ask.
I’m seriously considering buying a pair of wellies. I heard that the Clifton Suspension Bridge is stunning, but you’ll need waterproof footwear to truly appreciate it. I’m also planning a trip to Thornbury - it’s a bit of a trek, but I’ve heard they have a really good farmers market.
Right, need more coffee. and maybe a stiff drink. Seriously, this city is a rollercoaster. I’m going to check out TripAdvisor for some more recommendations. And Yelp, obviously.
Here’s a map:
And here’s a link to the local board: https://www.bristol.gov.uk/
I heard that the best way to experience Bristol is to just get lost. And bring an umbrella. Seriously.
Okay, that’s enough rambling for now. Time for another caffeine fix.
