Bristol: Rain, Rumors, and Really Weird Vibes

okay, so i’m pretty sure i’m running on caffeine and regret. i just landed back from Bristol, and honestly, my brain feels like a scrambled egg. 2634677 and 1826570072 - yeah, i wrote those numbers down somewhere. don’t ask. it felt important. the air was thick, like a damp wool blanket, and the pressure was sitting at 1016, which is…fine, i guess? humidity was 94, which is basically a sauna in here. it’s…there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. the temp was hovering around 8.5, but the feels-like was closer to 7, and the min was 8.17, max 9.17. it was a weird mix.

I was mostly just wandering, you know? trying to absorb the…stuff. Bristol’s got this really strange energy. like, it’s trying to be cool, but it’s also desperately clinging to its industrial past. the harbor is…well, it’s a harbor. lots of boats. lots of seagulls. and a surprising amount of chain-smoking. i stumbled into this tiny pub called ‘The Old Victualler’ - seriously, the name - and someone told me that the landlord, a guy named Bernard, keeps a collection of antique diving helmets. apparently, he’s convinced they’re haunted. i didn’t ask. i just ordered a pint of something dark and bitter. it was good.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time just staring at the *Harbourside, trying to figure out what it all meant. it’s a proper mess of brick and concrete, but there are these pockets of green, like little rebellions against the grey. i found this amazing vintage shop near St Nicholas Market - ‘Threads & Tales’ - and scored a ridiculously oversized corduroy jacket. it cost me £30, which is basically highway robbery, but it’s perfect. i’m thinking of distressing it even more.

Speaking of markets, St Nicholas Market is a chaotic, brilliant mess. street food everywhere, independent stalls selling everything from handmade jewelry to vintage records. i grabbed some halloumi fries - seriously, the best i’ve ever had - and overheard a group of students arguing about whether Banksy actually lives in Bristol. someone told me that he’s just a myth, perpetuated by the tourism board. i don’t know. i’m not buying it.

I checked out the SS Great Britain - yeah, the one Brunel built. it’s massive. you could get lost in there for days. it’s a bit touristy, sure, but it’s also genuinely impressive. i also spent an embarrassing amount of time trying to take photos of the
Clifton Suspension Bridge. it’s beautiful, obviously, but the reflections in the water were just…weird.

If you get bored, Cardiff is just a short drive away. or Bath, if you’re feeling fancy. but honestly, Bristol is weird enough on its own. the neighbors - mostly young creatives and students - seem pretty chill, though they do have a strange obsession with vintage cameras. i heard that the best place to get a decent coffee is ‘The Hideaway’ - it’s tiny and always packed.

I’m heading to Cornwall next, but i’ll definitely be back to Bristol. there’s something about this place that just…sticks with you. it’s not pretty, it’s not polished, but it’s real. and right now, that’s exactly what i needed.

Here’s a quick gear list for Bristol (because i always make lists, even when i don’t want to):
Waterproof jacket (obviously)
Comfortable boots (you’ll be doing a lot of walking)
Camera (duh)
A healthy dose of skepticism
And maybe a small bottle of whiskey.
