Bielefeld: The City That Wasn't Supposed to Exist (But Here I Am)

you ever wake up in a place and just feel like you’ve stumbled into a glitch in the matrix? that’s bielefeld for me. i rolled in on a tuesday, half expecting the whole city to evaporate like some internet hoax, but nope-there it was, all 327,000 people and a suspiciously crisp 12.11°c breeze that felt like it was judging my life choices.

i just checked and it’s 12.11°c and 43% humidity there right now, hope you like that kind of thing. i didn’t pack for “crisply suspicious,” but hey, that’s what happens when you let a drummer plan a trip. speaking of which, i’m here as a touring session drummer, which means i’ve got exactly 48 hours to find a decent practice space, a weirdly specific brand of vegan currywurst, and maybe a bar that doesn’t play schlager on repeat.

“you’re going to bielefeld? i heard the conspiracy is real,” said a guy at the train station. “but the coffee’s good, so maybe it’s worth the existential crisis.”

first stop: kaffee nische. it’s this tiny spot on obernstraße where the barista looked at me like i’d just asked for a cappuccino in a teacup. “that’s not how we do it here,” she said, and handed me a cortado that could’ve powered a small nation. the wifi was strong enough to upload a full drum track, so i’m calling it a win.

if you get bored, düsseldorf and dortmund are just a short drive away, but honestly, bielefeld’s got enough going on. i heard from a drunk guy at a tram stop that the altstadt has a secret underground jazz club that only opens when it rains. i’m still waiting for the rain, but i’ve got my sticks ready.

for lunch, i hit up curryleaf, a vegan currywurst stand that’s apparently a local legend. someone told me that the owner used to be a drummer too, so we bonded over broken cymbals and the eternal struggle of finding a good practice space. the currywurst? messy, spicy, and exactly what my soul needed.

in the evening, i wandered over to the johannessen park, which is basically a green oasis in the middle of the city. i sat on a bench, watched the locals do their evening jog, and tried to remember why i thought touring was a good idea. it’s moments like these that make you realize how much you love the chaos.

i also checked out the bielefeld museum, because apparently, i’m the kind of person who does that now. it’s small but packed with history, and i learned more about the linen industry than i ever thought possible. someone told me that the museum has a secret exhibit on the conspiracy theories surrounding the city, but i couldn’t find it. maybe it’s behind a hidden door or something.

anyway, bielefeld’s growing on me. it’s not flashy, but it’s got this quiet charm that’s hard to resist. and if you’re into conspiracy theories, coffee, and currywurst, you might just fall in love with it too.
