Belgrade's Grey Glow: A Drummer's Detour (and a Whole Lot of Coffee)

@Tobias King3/16/2026blog

okay, so belgrade. i wasn't supposed to be in belgrade. touring with the band fell through - some drama with the bassist and a rogue ferret, long story - and i needed a place to crash for a few days while i figured things out. landed here, and honestly? it’s… interesting.

I just checked and the air feels like a damp hug right now, hovering around thirteen degrees. Not exactly beach weather, but hey, at least it’s not raining. The sky’s this weird, flat grey - like someone forgot to paint it properly. It’s kinda beautiful, in a bleak, post-industrial sort of way.

I’m staying in a tiny apartment near *Dorćol, which is apparently the place to be. It’s all cobblestone streets and crumbling facades, but there’s this energy, you know? Like something’s about to happen. I spent most of yesterday wandering around, just soaking it in. Found this amazing little cafe - “Kafana Centar” - seriously, go there. The coffee is strong enough to wake the dead, and the owner, a guy named Milos, gave me the lowdown on the local scene.

Speaking of the local scene… overheard a couple of guys arguing outside a bar last night. Apparently, the
Kalemegdan Fortress is haunted. Drunk advice, probably, but it added to the atmosphere. Someone told me that the tunnels under the fortress are still used by… well, let’s just say people who don’t want to be found. Spooky, right? I’m thinking of checking it out tomorrow, just for kicks.

My neighbors are… quiet. If you get bored,
Novi Sad and Subotica are just a short hop on the train. I’m trying to find a decent drum shop - my kit got delayed, naturally - but so far, no luck. I did stumble across a vintage clothing store though. “Balkan Vintage” on Zetski Trg. It’s a goldmine. Seriously, I could spend all day in there.

Here's a quick rundown of what I've been carrying around (because, you know, drummer stuff):

My trusty sticks (Vic Firth 5A, obviously)
Noise-canceling headphones (essential for sanity)
A ridiculously oversized backpack (holds everything)
A notebook and pen (for jotting down random thoughts and setlists)
A portable espresso maker (priorities, people!)
A phrasebook (my Serbian is… developing)

I’ve been relying heavily on TripAdvisor for restaurant recommendations. Apparently, “Skadarlija” is the place to go for traditional Serbian food. I haven’t been yet, but it’s on the list. Yelp says it’s touristy, but the reviews are generally positive. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurants-g294470-Belgrade-Restaurants.html

Honestly, belgrade is a bit of a surprise. It’s not flashy or glamorous, but it’s got this raw, authentic vibe that I really dig. It’s a city that’s still figuring itself out, and that’s what makes it so compelling. I’m not sure how long I’ll be here, but for now, I’m enjoying the grey glow and the strong coffee. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll find a drum shop before my sanity completely unravels. Check out some more info on the city here: https://www.visitbelgrade.rs/

Oh, and one more thing. I heard that the nightlife around
Savamala* is… intense. Apparently, there are secret clubs and underground parties. Something a local warned me about, saying “be careful, it’s not for tourists.” Sounds intriguing, doesn’t it?
