Bardejov: Where Time Forgot to Update Its Wardrobe

so i'm sitting in this tiny Slovakian town called Bardejov, and honestly, it feels like someone hit pause on a medieval movie set in 1987. the numbers above? yeah, that's just my GPS coordinates and some random weather data from a station that probably runs on potatoes. but hey, it's 5°C outside, feels like -0.11°C, and the humidity is 86%. basically, it's sweater weather with a side of existential dread. if you're into crisp air that makes your nose run like a marathon runner, you'll love it here.

anyway, i rolled into town expecting nothing, and now i'm low-key obsessed. the main square is straight out of a fairy tale, cobblestone streets, pastel buildings, and a church that looks like it's judging everyone's life choices. someone told me that the locals still bake bread in outdoor ovens and gossip louder than a town crier. i believe it.

i stayed at this little guesthouse called Penzión Elisabeth (no website, just ask the guy at the bakery for "the place with the red shutters"). the bed creaked like an old ship, but the breakfast? homemade jam that tasted like summer and regret. also, the owner's cat sat on my suitcase for an hour, which i'm pretty sure is a Slovakian blessing.

if you get bored, Košice and Prešov are just a short drive away, but honestly, why would you leave? unless you're chasing modern conveniences, in which case, good luck. the wifi here is powered by a hamster on a wheel.

i overheard some drunk advice at a local pub: "don't trust the guy selling wooden spoons outside the church, he's got a side hustle in ghost tours." i didn't take the tour, but i did buy a spoon. it's now my most prized possession.

for food, check out *Taverna on the square. it's not on Yelp, but it should be. the goulash is the kind of hearty that makes you want to hug a stranger. and yes, i did hug a stranger. his name was Juraj, and he called me "the American with the spoon."

here's a map so you don't get lost in the time warp:

and because i'm a sucker for aesthetics, here are some stolen-from-the-internet vibes:

would i come back? absolutely. would i recommend it to my ex? probably not, but only because i don't want them to find out how magical this place is. Bardejov, you weird, wonderful time capsule. keep doing you.
